Harry Potter and the goblet of fire - 2005

It wasn't bad, it covered pretty much everything that I remember from the book. It's a little sad that there is so little of all the others, it's all Harry, but that's not the movie's fault, that's the story, that's how these books work, they don't have his name in the title for nothing, so we only see what he sees and witness what he witnesses, no more no less. Of course, I remember that in the book the ball was something more shocking, because Hermione tamed her hair and everyone was shocked at her beauty, while in the movie she simply tied her hair up and wore a pink dress, but she was already pretty before the ball. Other than that, all consideration would be on the story, therefore the book, not the movie.

About the movie, the dragon was pretty enough, the long flying boring but inevitable, and the actors their usual selves. There's very little Draco, although it was nice to see him laughing and dancing at the ball, for like one second though. It was interesting to watch again this movie after having a better understanding of who's who, and being able to catch more details than the first time when I found a little difficult to remember them all (just because I'm me and there are a lot of characters). The fact that Barty Crouch Jr kept sticking his tongue out was bording on ridiculous but it became more acceptable once you realised it's done deliberately so you can see what Couch Sr sees and why he has to die.

On with the story:

It starts showing that Wormtail and another man (played by David Tennant ^_^) are with Voldemort and his big snake, and are plotting something, and they kill a man without another thought. Harry wakes up with his scar hurting, he’s with Ron and Hermione and other Weasley (the twins and Ginny and Arthur) and they are going to watch the Quidditch World Cup. They meet Amos and Cedric Diggory on the way and take a portkey-boot and go together.

Cedric helps Harry up and he smiles (did anyone help the others? :-p )

Lots and lots of people, all the kids mad for Krum, especially Ron. They meet the Malfoy men at the stadium, Lucius is unpleasant as always, but scorns Draco for flaunting their seats with minister Fudge. The start of the game is announced and next scene the kids are chanting Krum’s name with an Ireland flag on their shoulders when Arthur hurries to tell them that they have to flee. Harry gets separated, only Hermione shouting his name, but he gets separated from the others and sees a wizard conjuring the dark mark in the sky. He doesn't know it's Crouch Jr. Well, at this point we don't know his name either, only know that he was the man with Voldemort.

On the train Ron doesn’t accept Harry buying him sweets - Harry meets and smiles to Cho Chang (now that I know who she is). At Hogwarts, they are informed that there will be a triwizard tournament, with schools Beaubaton and Durmstrang sending some students and the headmaster/tress at Hogwards.

A fourth name comes out after Fleur Delacour, Victor Krum an Cedric Diggory, and that’s Harry of course. So, want it or not, he’s now forced to compete. Ron is angry, because he thinks Harry put his name in the goblet without telling him. Rita Skeeter meets the four champions for an article, and goes with him into a broom closet to interview him first…

He gets a letter from Sirius, promising to meet him in his common room, and his face appears in the fireplace to tell him to be careful. Ron is still jealous and angry, and doesn’t talk to him. Hagrid shows Harry that the first task will be dragons (and also that he’s got a romance going with the giant Beaubatons headmistress).

Next thing we see the ‘Potter stinks’ badges and all the students like them and mock him. Harry tells Cedric about dragons being the first task. Draco taunts him from the tree and then tries to hex him, but Moody turns him into a ferret, and jumps him up and down until McGonagall stops him. All students laughs, while Draco is very shaken up and goes ‘my father will hear about this’ and then runs away like hell.

Seamus talks about blowing up things, the twins run a bet pool, and Moody seems to want to help Harry. When Hermione hugs him worried, Skeeter flashes them talking about young love…

Harry is not allowed a broom against the dragon, but he’s allowed a wand so he goes ‘accio broom’ and fights, the dragon breaks its chain and chases him, he has it crashed against a bridge and flies back to get the golden egg. Ron and Harry make peace.

Ron gets a new robe from mom for the ball, but it’s the ugliest thing they could find (don’t they have magic to make it a little better? or his mom at least, being older). McGonagall teaches them to dance. Ron mocks a girl for being a bit chubby (yeah, Ron who always gets angry when Malfoy mocks him for being poor) so he has to practice dance with Mc Gonagall. All the boys are reluctant to try, only Neville wants to. Harry has difficulties in asking a girl for the dance. Ron keeps talking in Snape’s class, disrupting the lesson (if it is a class, there are the twins there)  and he tries asking Hermione saying that it would be sad for a girl to go alone, but she’s already been invited. (kind of a jerk here, right?)

Harry go to the owlery and meets Cho and asks her to the ball, and she’s really really sorry but she already agreed to go with someone else… he waited too long.

Ron tried to invite Fleur but fled immediately, then Harry invites the sisters (the Patil)

Cho is with Cedric, and Hermione with Krum, Neville invited Ginny. They all dance, even Draco laughs while dancing, then there’s a rock band and they have fun, all but Harry and Ron and the two sisters, until at least one of them is invited by a Durmstrang boy.

When Victor goes to get her something to drink, Ron is very rude to her, and the last Patil goes on in search of someone else. Hermione ends up in tears, while Neville is still dancing. He had a lovely night.

After weeks, Harry still haven’t solved the egg clue. Hermione is worried, but Cedric helps him, he tells him to go to the prefect bathroom with his egg, so he goes, but it’s only thanks to Myrtle that he gets it (it's not like Harry said: learn about lizards of all sizes... no, he said very clearly dragons, so couldn't he be clearer now too? *bigsigh). It’s only when Moody sets Neville to help him with carrying some books that they talk and Neville helps him with his problem.

Victor saves Hermione, Cedric saves Cho, but Fleur was out of the game so Harry saves both Ron and Fleur’s little sister. Crouch starts suspecting something when he sees Moody doing that strange thing sticking his tongue out in that crazy way, and is later found dead.

Dumbledoor’s liquorice sweets in his office are really nasty, then somehow a pensieve appears and Harry watches the memory of Karkaroff accusing Barty Crouch Jr. (so Harry hears about Snape being an ex-death eater and now a spy for them).

Snape accuses Harry of stealing ingredients to make the polijuice potion.

Next task is the maze, a very big and scary maze where strange things happen (is Krum’s wand bent? did he attack Fleur? but not Harry? Is that how they managed to make sure that Harry took the portkey-cup?) and the vines trap Fleur. Later the three boys meet and Victor attacks Cedric who responds with an expelliarmus that does not take Vctor’s wand away but sort of stupefied him… then Harry and Cedric see the cup and run, Cedric is trapped too but Harry help him and then they take the cup together - Cedric told him to get it because he stopped to help him, but Harry is all noble and kind and offers to take it together, and they arrive in a graveyard, and Harry sees the ‘Tom Riddle, died 1943’ grave, and yells for Cedric to get the cup and go back, but Cedric of course asks questions, and points his wand at Wormtail when he appears (with a white, small yoda-looking voldemort in his arms), Voldemort says ‘kill the spare’ and Wormtail avada kedavra him on the spot, then puts voldemort in a cauldron and adds his own willingly sacrified right hand, and then harry’s blood, and the dark lord ‘shall rise again’… (quite a disgusting little thing to see, but I’m glad these spells provide clothing at least).

Voldemort touches his wand to Wormtail’s faded dark mark and a bunch of his death eaters appear, Lucius Malfoy among them. Crabbe and Goyle too, if I understood correctly. For some reason, Voldemort tells us that it was Lily’s love that stopped him, ancient magic, and not Harry himself… (as if being defeated by a loving mother was no shame for the darkest, most powerful wizard ever, as he likes to think he is).

Then Voldemort wants to play duel with Harry, but before that he crucios him, then they finally face each other. Voldemort shouts an avada kedavra, and Harry his expelliarmus, and the two magics hold each other, and the souls of those he killed come out (the spirits of Cedric, the gardener we saw at the very beginning, and Harry’s parents who help him telling him when to let go and rush for the portkey. Harry runs to Cedric’s body and accios the cup. When they appear back on Hogwarts ground, all cheer but Fleur is the first to scream, to understand. Harry screams when they try to pry him away from Cedric’s body, and Harry yells that Voldemort is back. Moody then takes Harry away, the poor boy is still traumatised, and ‘Moody’ starts asking what did he feel in the Dark Lord presence… and then mentions the graveyard before Harry says anything about it… and Moody starts revealing everything, that he won because they wanted him to. Suddenly Dumbledoor bursts in and Snape gives fake-Moody the veritaserum so they find the real Moody and capture Crouch Jr.  (Azkaban is missing one apparently, so after Sirius they just keep escaping?)

Dumbledoor tells the school that Voldemort killed Cedric.

Time of saying goodbye, Victor gives Hermione his addresss hoping she’d write, and Fleur gives Ron a last thank-you kiss.
