Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments - season 1

First of all, I never read the books, so no comparisons here.

As a tv show, it’s nice enough, although not great because of a few things. The story is ok (basically there’s one big bad guy who thinks only those with human or angel blood deserve to live, but if their blood is tainted by demon blood they must be killed, and is merciless even with his own followers, and this lord Vol… I mean Valentine, we’ll have to deal with him for the whole season and more), but dragged too slow. There are many characters, and yet there seem to be two protagonists, Jace and Clary.

Now: Jace has two expressions, with or without pouting lips.

Clary spends the beginning being a frightened little girl, then all of a sudden she’s a leader and a warrior.

They are always in a hurry, from beginning to end, and yet they waste so much precious time with stupid things, like Jace and Simon fighting over who gets Clary, or Clary and Jace flirting with each other. Like, it’s a life-and-death situation where every second is important, but that can certainly wait while I make bed-eyes to this blond right? Yach.

And obviously friendship doesn’t exist. Simon and Maureen are friends, but she’s in love with him. Simon and Clary have been friends since they were little, but he’s desperately in love with her. Jace and Alec grew up together, but Alec is in love with him, who knows why, which is very annoying.

I love Malec of course, but they have very little time. I like Luke, but likewise.

They call their headquarter The Institute, and sometimes you see other people working there, but usually it’s just them, and anyone can do anything without anyone else seeing anything.

All in all, this first season is not something I’ll feel the need to ever see again.

1 - The mortal cup

Clary’s life turns upside down on her 18th birthday. She goes out with her friends for a normal night out when she bumps into a blond guy (Jace) that only she can see, so she follows him to understand why and she sees him and other two people using words to kill strange people (actually shapeshifting demons). She tells everything to her mom, very agitated, but Jocelyn knows that it’s all true because she has a secret that she never told her. She actually had warlock Magnus seal her memories when she was a girl, so that nobody could find her.

Jocelyn doesn’t have time to explain everything though because some rogue shadowhunters get to her house in search of the mortal cup. Jocelyn sends Clary to Luke at the police station, telling her he’s the only one she can trust, but she hears him talking to other from the Circle saying that he doesn’t care about them, so she runs away, back home where she’s attacked but Jace saves her and takes her with him.

Jocelyn takes a potion that has her in some kind of green stasis (something Magnus gave her as protection?) and she’s brought to Valentine.

Clary has a hard time understanding everything, she only wants her mom back.

Alec and Isabelle are brother and sister, and they took Jace in when he was young.

2 - The descent into hell isn't easy

Simon was worried about her so she has him see everything. Jocelyn was a member of the Circle as well, but left it like Hodge, their weapon trainer.

Jocelyn’s friend Dot is a warlock and she runs to Magnus. He’s protecting the other warlocks because now Valentine is hunting them knowing that one of them is protecting Jocelyn. They all escape together but Dot stays and is taken by demons to Valentine.

Clary, Jace, Simon, Alec and Isabelle go to the City of Bones to get her memories back. They can only retrieve one thing, said by Luke and Jocelyn while she was already grown up, and that’s that Valentine is her father (we kinda got that already, but it was quite the shock for her).

Isabelle left Simon alone in his van, and he got kidnapped by the Night Soldiers (or something like that) and they ask the mortal cup in exchange for him.

3 - Dead man's party

Isabelle sleeps with a Seelie she knows and then has him tell her how to enter the vampires hotel from a ‘back door’ to cause distraction. Alec goes back to the institute to get his bow and arrows and meets her there. Jace and Clary steal a vampire’s bike but then waste so much time talking those vampires are already there when they arrive…

A female vampire, someone important it would seem, drinks Simon’s blood, and maybe had him drink a bit of hers too, but then the four heroes arrive. The female vampire leaves, (Camille, I think, the one who also sleeps with Isabella’s Seelie) but the male, Raphael, has them all escape because he is afraid of Valentine too.

Clary seems to like Jace a lot, but he says he’s never been in love and doesn’t understand friendship either. Alec seems to be jealous of Jace, to be honest, although they say they grew up like brothers.

Clary is very happy to see Simon alive, she cares very much about him, he's her best friend, but he’s clearly in love with her, unfortunately.

4 - Raising hell

Clary has a dream about Magnus taking her memories, and after talking to Simon she has his full name. Magnus is the High Warlock of Brooklyn. He was once Camille’s lover and he’s 300 years old (maybe, not sure). They want to lure him out of hiding offering him a necklace he bought for her. They go to a rave to meet him and they give him the jewel, but he doesn’t have her memories, he gave them away to protect her, so he wouldn’t end up dead like Dot. Alec kills an assassin and Magnus is fascinated by him but leaves. They got one of his buttons though, and Jace with his parabatai Alec track him down. They find him fighting some Valentine’s men and join forces. And Magnus formally introduces himself. He gives the necklace to Isabelle, taken with her brother :-p

Magnus helps them summon the demon with her memory, in exchange the demon asks a memory of the ones they love the most, takes a memory of Alec from Isabelle, of Jocelyn from Clary, of Jace from Alec… and Alec freaks out and breaks the bond. The demon grabs Jace and to save him Clary kills the demon losing the memories forever.

Simon goes home, Maureen asks him to date but he doesn’t answer, all lost in te smell of her blood. Simon leaves her a message, but then he doesn’t answer her call and goes bak to the vampire.

5 - Moo shu to go

Alec locks away Clary’s necklace because Valentine saw her through it. Isabelle’s mom is not very sweet, rather tough. Maryse didn’t hug Isabelle, was very rough with her, but she hugged Jace and gave a small kiss to Alec. She doesn’t approve of Isabelle.

Alec starts a talk with Jace, thinking he’s angry about the image of him, with the demon… but Jace is all, you love me so what I love you too we’re brothers.

Alec is training Clary and she tells him there’s an important box at her house that could help, but then Magnus calls him and asks him out and he gets distracted… and Clary goes away.

Alec finds her and she confronts with the knowledge that he’s in love with Jace as if it was nothing.

Raphael sends Simon away. Luke’s collegue who knows about him, they’re both some kind of demons… and now we see him enter a place as a wolf. They are trying to track Clary as well.

They find her without telling Luke, they want the cup, and kidnap her and Simon. Jace is very upset when Alec tells him, and they fight over it.

Simon is chained but manages to free himself, finds a phone in a locker and calls Clary’s phone. Jace answers and he tells them where they are. Simon starts a fire and they lock her up. Luke finds her and takes her away, but Jace knows him out and leave. Isabella saves Simon, but they are surrounding by werewolves. The alpha leader is challenged and killed, by Luke, so he’s the new alpha and the others bow to him. Jace is still angry at Alec, so he leaves him and Isabelle behind while he takes Luke to Magnus so he can cure him. Simon and Clary obviously go with him.

6 - Of men and angels

Magnus start helping immediately but needs more ingredients for the potion,so Simon and Jace go find them. Magnus also says he needs Alexander there.

Jace and Simon bicker  over her like jerks losing a lot of time, but eventually get what they need.

Isabelle is upset because she finds out that her mother wants Alec to marry a political ally, and she worries for his future happiness and wants to protect him. Alec is very respectful of rules, believes in his mother and their honor and cause, but after Isabelle tells him he gets upset and goes to Magnus, who actually needs his help because he’s exhausted and needs his energy to help Luke. When finally Clary gives him the potion Luke gets better.

While they were waiting, Magnus told her what he knew. When they were young, Jocelyn married Valentine and they had ideals, and Luke was his parabatai, but then Valentine became obsessed and always angry and that brought Jocelyn and Luke together. They did not have an affair, but they fell in love. Valentine started experimenting with downworld blood, injecting stuff into his system. He became insane and wanted to kill all downworlders, seelies and warlocks, everyone he didn’t consider pure. He killed lots of people to get the cup, but when he got it, Luke and Jocelyn stopped him and she got the cup and ran.

Luke also tells her how he became a werewolf. He was a shadowhunter like the rest, but one night Valentine betrayed their parabatai bond and tricked him, locked him in a place with werewolf, hoping he’d die.

Alec is still there, helping Magnus clean up, and accepting a drink, and Magnus clearly says that he wanted to see him again, but Alec doesn’t know what to say.

7 - Major arcana

Clary figures out the cup is in the tarot’s card, and Luke has them at the station but when he goes to get them he’s taken by internal affairs. Captain Vargas is killed by some demon in there.

Clary and Jace, with Alec and Isabelle, work together and she gets the cup. When they get back, she kisses Jace and he kisses back. Alec and Isabelle see them.

Simon slept with Maureen but in the morning he sees her as Clary and calls her Clary. He’s going crazy, he now is afraid he’s becoming a vampire, but Clary doesn’t have time to talk to him and Jace hangs up her phone while they’re talking. He eventually goes back to the vampire hotel to get answers, and Camille tells him that it’s her blood having curious effects, but it would have faded with time, but now that he’s there, she attacks him… and the episode ends.

8 - Bad blood

Clary leaves a message on Simon’s phone saying she got the cup, but she doesn’t check her messages!!! Raphael comes bringing Simon in his arms. His soul is transitioning now, either they kill him or bring him back a vampire. When Camille comes to get rid of the body, Raphael convinces the other vampires that she’s too dangerous and broke the rules too many times, so they turn on her. Clary buries him and waits for him to get out as a vampire. Raphael has blood sacks for him ready. Simon is shocked and repulsed by what he is now and runs away. Raphael vows to take care of him.

Lydia is the Clave’s envoy, here to check on how they are running things. She refused an arranged marriage too and married the man she loved, but he was killed.

Since the pack is protecting Clary, Valentine sends demons at their place.

Lydia accidentally tells Alec that his parents are ex-circle members, thinking he knew. She brings the demon the wolves killed to the institute, and wants Magnus to have a loot at it. Isabelle tells him that their parents are trying to find him a wife, so he speaks with Alec who is quite fed up and maybe wants to live for himself now, but is conflicted when Lydia has to remove them from control of the institute. So Alec proposes to her, to become the allies their families has always been and run the institute together.

Another one of those demons attacks the institute, Hodge fights him alone for a while until finally Alec comes too and together they kill it.

9 - Rise up

Lydia has Meliorn brought in and arrested, then wants him brought to the silent brothers to discovers if he knows something and is hiding it. Alec wants to give the cup to the Clave, so Jace and Isabella ask Magnus help in getting Alec’s stele without him noticing anything. Alec tells Magnus that he’s getting married.

It’s really hard for Simon to come to terms with his vampire powers and hunger, luckily Raphael gives him blood to drink.

Clary unites the downworld, a sort of alliance between them three shadowhunters and the werevolves and vampires to help rescue Maliorn, getting an alliance with the Seelies too.

As a thank you, Meliorn offers Clary to help her find her father.

10 - This world inverted

To repay his life debt, Merliorn sends Clary through an interdimentional portal that should take her to where her father is, only it’s a new world where shadowhunters won long ago and they are no more, and she will end up in the body of the Clary of that world. The Magnus of that world reads tarots for a living, but Clary convinces him of her situation. His magic has gone dormant but they kick it up again.

Lydia arrests Isabelle and Alec wants to give her the mortal cup in exchange for her, but of course it’s not there anymore. He wants to find Jace so he does a sort of ritual that might break his parabatai’s bond, causing a demon to slip through the portal, so Merliorn has Jace go as well. Merliorn closes the portal so when Alec and Lydia get there it’s closed.

they kill the demon but Jace is stung. Magnus lets them through to where Valentine is, and the place is deserted when they get there, but for a locked up man, Jace’s father.

The Internal Affairs man Fisk found Luke again, so they played a trick on him, let him believe Simon was the demonic killer, then Luke came and shot Simon many times ‘saving his life’, so he has his job back now.

11 - Blood calls to blood

Raphael reluctantely gives them some blood to help Jace and he gets better, but Clary is suspicious about this Michael Wayland. A woman inquisitor from the Clave comes for Isabelle’s case. Alec wants her to have an advocate and she asks for Magnus, so Alec asks him. In exchange, Magnus asks for… him, or in alternative something really important, his bow, and Alec accepts. Nothing they do works because the Inquisitor only wants the Cup.

Jace, Michael and Luke fight demons while Clary gets in their new hideout and sees her mother.

Clary tries using the cup and when Michael says ‘let me try’ she just hands it over… just like that, and he lets the glamour go, and it was not Michael, it was Valentine! She has the real cup, and Valentine tells them he’s really Jace’s father, always has been, under a glamour.

Valentine escapes, but Luke is alive and Jocelyn is there and they take her to the institute.

Clary gave Lydia the Cup, so Isabelle is free. Alec gives Magnus the bow, but he gives it back, for safekeeping. Magnus tells him he actually likes Lydia, but still thinks the marriage is wrong, because they’ll both be lonely and neither deserves that.

Luke tells Simon that Jace and Clary are brother and sister.

12 - Malec

Magnus tries again to talk to Alec, saying they feel the same, but Alec is all about family honor and ‘back off!’, so Malec says he won’t ask again. Jace doesn’t want to talk with Clary about what they found out. Magnus goes with the two of them to find Ragnor Fell, hoping the warlock can wake her mother. When they find him, he’s willing to help, but a demon attacks him and kills him. Magnus is very hurt, they were friends.

Clary and Jace suspects someone at the institute betrayed them, and suspect Lydia. Clary talks to her because Jace might be too aggressive, and she just goes up and accuses her, great plan. Lydia knows Alec has feelings for Magnus, but she respects his desire to restore the family honor.

Isabelle puts Alec and Jace together to talk, as his bachelor party, and they make up. Clary asks Simon to go with her at the wedding.

Magnus shows up at the wedding, and Alec can’t go through with it. He steps down and kisses him. His mother is very angry, his father is more understanding. Magnus finds out that the book they need belongs to Camille, who is locked in the basement of the vampire hotel.

Lydia is about to go away, gets the cup but someone hits her and takes it. We see later it was Hodge, who plans to give it to Valentine.

Clary tells Jace that their mother never abandoned him, she thought he was dead.

13 - Morning star

Hodge gives the cup to Valentine to be free again, and he starts creating new shadowhunters right away, from the mundanes who survive. The wolves track Hodge down, but too late. Jace fights him, and cuts his hand, but Alec stops him from killing him.

Jace takes the ring Hodge used to talk to Valentine.

To get the book, Clary and Simon and Isabelle deceive the vampires and get Camille out. She wants Simon to sign a document that will pardon her of all charges, and she goes to Magnus for it. She was someone he loved more than a hundred years ago, she broke his heart.

Alec walks in right when she kisses him, making for an awkward situation.

Clary finds the book, but Valentine gets there with his new shadowhunters, and they have Clary, Isabelle, Simon, Magnus and Alec prisoner, while he talks to Jace, and then Jace goes away with him. Magnus talks briefly with Alec, but Alec is more troubled by him being immortal than by his history with Camille.

With the book, Magnus wakes up Jocelyn. Valentine wants to raise an army with Jace by his side.
