Kong: Skull Island - 2017

It was nice, entertaining enough, with an acceptable ending and a few hilarious moments quite unexpected. Many actors in the cast are famous, but they all do their good part. Tom Hiddleston is very very handsome, with a hero look that suits him and makes him look very handsome indeed, but honestly I rather expected a hero role for him… he’s a good guy, sure, on the right side till the end, but doesn’t really do anything especially heroic. The photographer is a nice character, and it’s she takes a few good shots, but doesn’t do much otherwise - basically we all know she’s there so Kong can lift a blond on its palm. Packard is a hateful character, but that’s the point, he’s the one who loves war and killing.

Credibility seems a strange word when referred to this kind of film, but actually there were so many silly things that the presence of Kong was the one who made most sense. I mean, I thought there was only a certain number of people there on the ship, then lots and lots of helicopters took flight full of people, managed a big storm without problems, not even getting wet (and war helicopters have no doors), and when Kong appears they launch themselves into battle without the slightest strategy. Sure, ok… but you know, this is a movie to entertain, so I could accept that.

It’s a bit boring when they get separated into groups, but not too much, and Marlow’s character was nice and funny enough.

So, not exactly the movie I was expecting. No real hero scene. Kong had lots of space which was nice, but at the same time they sort of made him move more like a man than an ape. The evil monsters were interesting, but then again that sort of diminishes the moral point: they are saying that you should not kill Kong because then the evil beasts would have free reign and the humans would have no hope of surviving, but think about it, that’s a very arrogant-human-point-of-view: Kong had done nothing to them before they started bombing his home, and yet they arrived with machines, guns and bombs, and then say that he is the monster… this is humans’ way of dealing with nature: destroying it.

Details now:

First we see two soldiers crash-landing on an island during the war in 1944, one American and one Japanese, and they keep fighting each other until Kong’s face appears… then we move to 1973.

A few scientists get the government to approve them a mission to reach a mysterious island. Randa thinks there’s a mysterious creature there, while scientist Brooks is more into geological discoveries. A scientist girl joins them. It’s an unexplored island, so a team of soldiers is assigned to the mission - the team consists of young men who were already savouring their return home but are instead dragged along because colonel Packard gets bored with normal life and only enjoys war. Randa also hires Conrad as an expert guide, who has a past in British special forces. Weaver is a photographer, a fotoreporter, and she thinks there’s something secret the government is hiding and somehow manages to get a pass so she can join the expedition.

It’s a difficult journey, first on a ship and then using various helicopters. As they reach Skull Island, the soldiers follow the plan and start with the bombs. These many small bombs make holes in the ground that are supposed to tell the scientists what is underneath the Earth, but they are still flying when suddenly Kong appears, as huge as a mountain, and the battle helicopters vs Kong goes exactly as you can imagine. The humans are all separated in groups, without helicopters, and their number has been considerably shortened.

Packard is full of hate for the beast, and is determined to reach one of his men, Chapman, because their weapons are there as well.

Another group lead by Conrad and Weaver finds Marlow, a soldier living on the island since 1944. His Japanese friend Gunpei died, but he wasn’t completely alone, there are people living there, beware of the many dangerous creatures but worshipping Kong as their king, their protector, as long as Kong lives they’ll be safe. He says the bombs woke up, or brought to the surface, evil creatures living underneath, and that’s why Kong was so furious - good that they can see that, come on, nobody checked before they released the bombs if they could have been killing anything more than trees.

A giant spider, a huge octopus are among the scary creatures they encounter, but the evil ones are the skullcrawlers, and we’ll see a few of them.

Only a handful of soldiers remains, Chapman dies, and also Randa. When Conrad’s group finds Packard’s group, they try to explain that Kong is not evil, but Packard doesn’t listen and threatens them. He wants Kong dead, and goes on with his men. The evil colonel almost succeeds, injuring Kong in a lake of fire or something, he covered the water with fuel and poor Kong got on fire… but then all the chaos brings up the biggest of the skullcrawlers, and it’s a big fight between it and Kong. Finally the colonel shuts up when Kong hits him like he was an ant. Good riddance.

All the others run away, but one soldier stays behind, intent on stopping the skullcrawler’s king with a couple of handbombs, which might have worked if he had been eaten, but the thing uses its tail against him, so he dies without any damage to the beast.

Kong is the only one who can defeat it, of course, and it’s a long battle but luckily he wins.

He even saves the girl from drowning ^_^

So, the end: those who survived reach the part of the island where they are right on time to meet the helicopters that will save them. Kong appears in all his glory, and seems pretty much whole, despite the fire, the soldiers and the beasts.
