Stowaway - 2021

Nope, too damn depressing. It’s well done, if you like the drama genre, but I can’t speak about the science because I know nothing of that, so I can’t say how accurate or plausible they are about space travel and it’s problems. Not perfectly done though, no, because there are still things that make no sense, absolutely no sense, but are there only so that it will be more of a shock when the problem is discovered… but here the suspense fails because it was obvious it had to happen. I mean, a (space)ship for three people, they discover there’s a man on board, they heal him and make him feel welcome, and it’s all very nice and companionable, without anyone raising any practical questions… the commander tells about him to the Earth control or however it’s called, and that’s it. They only seem concerned whether he got there by accident or on purpose. They are pretty sure it was an accident - he was working there, and they found him injured and barely alive, and as Doctor Zoe puts it, I’m really surprised he was still alive as well, since he had a bleeding injury and he went undiscovered for several hours.

Anyway, going more in details, they chat about his life and about music, and don’t wonder if this new situation will cause troubles. Did they have food for four people? It’s a two-year mission, and one more person would require at least 730 rations if he eats once a day, 1460 if doubled. Did they really have so much more? I don’t know many things, but they didn’t even address the issue. If it’s possible, then say it, it not then explain how it will work out!

When they discover that the bit where he was working is ruined and that’s where they get the oxygen from, they are in trouble. We are told that it cannot be repaired, just like that, so they only have enough for three but not four. The only thing the commander seems capable of doing in this movie is crying. Scientist Kim uses his research - basically ruining it, because it was destined for Mars - but it’s not enough, and after a while it’s nothing at all because the algae die.

He’s upset by this, but I don’t think the actor conveys how much, or maybe it wasn’t scripted to show how much, because that’s not the point they want to focus on, I don’t know.

Anyway, at first they think they should let Michael (the stowaway) die, but Zoe insists on trying everything, so there’s a long and risky walk outside to go to the other module to recover some oxygen (I still don’t really understand how one oxygen cylinder could be enough to sustain one person for two years, but they say that’s how it is, so there’s that).

They only have time to recover one because they have to hurry back inside because of sun radiation all of a sudden, but then Zoe loses that too, and since the algae died they now only have enough for two people, they say, so Zoe volunteers to go out again alone, without Kim, and retrieve another one even if she’ll die of radiation. She manages to do it alone, this time, and gives it to them, then she remains outside to die. That’s how it ends.

No, thank you, I have no intention of ever seeing this movie again.
