Too many clients by Rex Stout

This would have been my favourite Nero Wolfe story, but for one thing. When Archie went to the house of a couple involved, and found out that the husband had brutally beaten her, so much that at first he had thought she was dead, he did only two things: 1.he said to the man: 'she's your wife, not mine, but has a doctor seen her?' ; 2.he asked the woman 'do you want me to send a doctor?' or something like that, and that was it, he didn't care anymore about them. Not even a harsh comment, not a thought, as if she had deserved it, or if that was a husband-wife matter only. Sure she had been unfaithful, but that is reason for divorce, not for violence. I can not forget this, and it really disgusted me. I had enjoyed the book , it was probably the only Wolfe story honest enough with its readers. The story was all in all simple: a rich man had a room in a house that he used to meet the women he cheated on his wife with. When he's killed, Wolfe and Archie investigate without the police, to keep the room a secret. They are hired by Mr Aiken of the same company of the deceased , to keep any scandal away from the company; by the widow Mrs Yaeger to find out the murderer, and also from the new owners of that house with the famous room, because the same person also killed their daughter, because she wanted to blackmail him. At the end Wolfe finds proof that Mr Aiken did it, because Yaeger had taken away his power in the company, or something like that, so he makes him sign a confession, then gives him time to kill himself. The company will pay Wolfe lots of money but he won't take any from the other clients. In the confession there was no mention of the dead girl, deliberately, to avoid any connection to the parents' house, but at least they know her murderer has been found and is now dead. It would have been a good book, but for that hideous episode. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. I expected something from Archie, anything but what he did: send champagne to the husband. What did that mean? Did Archie not care at all about her, about what happened? I am so so disappointed in him.
