Suicide squad - 2016

Well... yes and no. It was a wasted chance, is what it was. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t all that good either. It had good moments, but it also had very boring moments. Personally, I didn’t like the Joker’s makeup, those teeth were gross. The hair and the lipstick were ok, they were very ‘joker-y’, but the teeth...why?!?!? Their story... in the movie it was nice and yet it made no sense. A movie is good if everyone can enjoy it even if they don’t know the story - and its being true to the story makes the story-fans totally in love - but in this movie we’re told and we see that : a psychiatrist tries to cure the joker, slowly falls in love with him to the point that - we can guess - she gives him a weapon to help him escape or something; well, he asked for one, but how his gang got in is not specified. After he’s freed, he gives her a painful electroshock saying he wants to hurt her, and she says ‘I can take it’ which could simply be courage in front of the enemy (it’s not, but it could be, and that’s what it seems when you watch the movie). Next thing we know, they’re together and he asks her a proof of love and she jumps into the acid pool, he moves to go away then jumps in and gets her out... so what, the electroshock made her crazy? what’s in between the “I want to hurt you really bad” to the “would you die/live for me?” scene? It doesn’t make sense. Anyway, without those horrible teeth that would have been a great scene, the best of the movie, when she smiles and falls down and he goes but then turns around and jumps in to get her, the moment when their love is established on both parts.
The other characters: Amanda Waller was understandable up to the point when she shot the analysts in the room because they have no clearance for that... at the beginning she said that Superman ‘shares our values’, and what are her values that she shoots innocent people like that? I hated that scene.
The introduction to the characters was too long. One by one, we see them in prison and then in action, and there are a lot of words and I think they wasted a lot of time on pointless scenes that would have been better spent explaining the Harley-Joker relationship.
The introduction to the witch was absurd. What self-respecting archeologist would find a relic and immediately break it? And if they knew that that was what she had done, why did they take the second relic which imprisoned her brother and think nothing of it?!? And after the Enchantress escaped, why didn’t they destroy her heart? Amanda stabbed it a few times, but that’s it: did they know she was still alive? Why did they keep the heart?
Anyway:
Will Smith è Floyd ‘Deadshot’, a hitman for hire, he never misses, but he is arrested because Batman (Ben Affleck) finds him when he’s with his daughter and she begs him not to shoot him so he surrenders.
Harley Quinn is also captured by Batman: she was with the Joker but when the car fell in the water and Batman went to rescue her, he was nowhere to be seen.
Killer Croc (or KC)’s skin looks like a crocodile’s, and he’s more comfortable in the sewers than with people.
Diablo can become fire, from little flames to big fires, but he wasn’t arrested, he surrendered himself because after killing his family he didn’t want to use his power anymore. He had used it for criminal activities of course, and the wife wanted to leave with the children and he lost control of his power and burned down everything. Boomerang is a thief who doesn’t like team work, and Flash got him.
This is Amanda’s great idea of a team: the worst of the worst to fight hostile supernatural beings, only problem is, her secret card, her most powerful asset, becomes the movie villain because she loses control of it - basically without her great idea there might not be anything to battle. The enchantress is in the body of archeologist June Moon: Amanda has the witch’s heart so she thinks she can control her as she likes, but during the night while June is asleep the enchantress comes out and frees her brother, trapped in a sort of doll like she was. The brother starts killing people to gain strength after she tells him that humanity is now their enemy, the same humanity that used to worship them now worships only machines. Not knowing about this, Amanda sends June and her lover, soldier Flag, against him, but as soon as June lets her out with the word ‘enchantress’, she disappears going to her brother. Amanda’s repeated stabs to her heart have no effect because he protects her sharing with her his power. She starts building an army transforming regular people into strange creatures - a sort of no-face covered in bubbles - and starting a big spell/machine that goes up in the sky like in ghostbusters. Now Amanda has to call the team to defeat her. To be sure that they won’t escape or do something wrong, they put a chip in their neck and they have an app (I mean, basically that’s what it is) on their phone with their pictures on it: they click on a picture and that person immediately dies. There was another one in the team but he joined late and was the first to die, so basically it’s only in the movie to show us and them how easily they can be killed, and also that Amanda and Flag are serious in their threat. There’s also Katana, a woman who hates criminals because they killed her husband with the same sword she uses now.
They defeat a lot of the witch’s soldiers, then Amanda joins them, after shooting her team of analysts without any reasonable reason - ‘the were not cleared for any of this’ is not an acceptable reason, and makes the character totally detestable without excuse.
The Joker disables Harley’s chip in the neck and comes to take her away. She goes with him without a single thought, and Amanda orders Deadshot to kill her, but he doesn’t want to and ‘misses’ the target. Amanda then orders her men to shoot down their vehicle (what was it, an helicopter? I think so but can’t remember well enough to be 100% sure), and they do it. Harley falls out and watches as it crashes down. We know the Joker can’t be dead because, well, because he’s the Joker! But it looks like he died in the crash and Harley looks heartbroken, so she has nothing to do and joins again the team who she now calls friends.
They reach the enchantress and she tries to trick them with images in their minds where Deadshot defeated Batman and Harley had a normal life with a normal Joker that married her and they had two children and were happy... but Diablo doesn’t fall for the images of his family alive and loving, he knows what he did and can recognize the truth so he wakes them up; Diablo alone fights her brother: to honour his name he becomes a huge flames-Diablo and contains him well enough to keep him right above the explosive so they both die when it goes off.
The enchantress offers them to join her and rule the world together - well, if they bow to her and worship her like a goddess, that is, and Harley moves forward, saying she’ll join her because the world hates them all and that she ‘lost her Puddin’ and maybe she can do something about that, but when Harley kneels before the enchantress, she grabs a sword and cuts her chest and takes her heart out. Now she’s vulnerable again. (The enchantress had captured Amanda but not killed her, and used her to take back her heart and to gain information on Earth’s secrets).
With explosives they stop the enchantress’ plan. Instead of killing her right away, Flag takes her heart and promises to kill her unless she gives him June back, but she refuses saying he won’t have the courage to do it, but he promised June that he’d stop the enchantress and so he does, squashing the heart in his hands until she becomes dust. He thinks he killed June, but she comes out alive.
For a moment they all think they’re free now, but Amanda sends them back to prison, with ten years off their sentences and a wish granted, since Deadshot insisted he wanted to see his daughter first. Harley asks for an expresso machine, KC for something I didn’t understand but later we see him watching tv down in his sewer; Boomerang wants to go away free so he ends up locked up in a cell without any privilege.
We see Deadshot spending some time with his daughter until Flag takes him back to prison, and Harley in her cell with her new expresso machine, until men burst in and she’s delighted to see that her Joker is alive and has come for her to take her home.
The last seen shows Amanda giving Bruce Wayne the files on the other metahumans, but he doesn’t explain what he needs that for.
