Days of thunder - 1990

Well, it was a bit boring, honestly. A bit like ‘top gun’ but with less appeal and much more dirt. There is no much heart in this movie, unless you really really like watching stuff about car racing, there isn’t much else here. The only thing I liked was Robert Duvall.
Tom Cruise plays Cole, an ambitious, impetuous young man that knows nothing at all about cars but is good at driving and wants to be a pilot in race car championships. He starts driving for boss Tim (Randy Quaid) with the help of Harry (Robert Duvall) who makes a car for him and works on it trying to find a connection with this arrogant guy. They do establish a relationship, start working together, Cole trying to explain in his own words what is wrong with the car so Harry can fix it. After a bad start he finally starts doing well, until the day he has an accident, crashing into Rowdy’s car (Michael Rooker). Both end up at the hospital, and meet doctor Lewicki (Nicole Kidman).
After a very bad start (Cole thought she was another joke from the guys, that they had hired again a girl to play a part, he takes her hand and puts it on... well, yeah, quite an embarrassing way to meet your doctor), Cole and the doctor start seeing each other and fall in love. Of course.
Cole has no serious damage, but Rowdy won’t be able to compete anymore. Tim has found another driver, a young ambitious unscrupulous guy who takes his place. After maybe a year, Cole talks to Harry about competing again with Rowdy’s car (Rowdy asked him so he can get the money from the sponsors). He does, and what do you know, he wins, also winning his fears after the accident.
What a surprise.
Cole was a hot-head, repeating that racing is the only thing he can do, and there wasn’t much more to his character.
Harry was ‘the car whisperer’, always talking to the car, but at least he was a better actor.
