Now you see me - 2013

Disappointing. It promised to be exciting in the way that good magic tricks are, but as it often happens it is easy to build up biiiig stories and events but it’s not so easy to wrap it up successfully. The ending is terrible, it has no sense at all, it’s left partially unexplained, nobody knows what will happen to the protagonists, plus the love story is terrible, unbelievable, forced, added only because apparently American movies HAVE to include a love story, which is very very annoying because, as a woman, I ask : can’t you refrain yourself from adding love-stories every time a woman is in the cast? Is that the reason why you cast women? The only reason? Can’t you really accept the idea that a woman could work with a male colleague without falling for him???
Anyway, that’s not the main problem, the whole plot is the main problem.
In a few words, the plot is: four people who perform magic tricks to live receive a card that apparently has a special meaning: they meet and start working together. They become famous, then they rob a bank, they rob a millionaire, they rob a safe and they give all the money to the people in the city, or to those that went to see their show. They are chased by the FBI and a woman from Interpol, but are never caught, and they frame a guy named Thaddeus who has fun in destroying other magicians simply putting all the money of the safe into his car, so he’s arrested. At the end, after having completed successfully their plan, they are accepted into a sort of secret society for ‘real magicians’ and we hear nothing more about them. The FBI guy goes to meet the Interpol woman and explains everything to her because they are in love :-/  and she’s ok with it because apparently she likes magic and isn’t troubled at all about the robberies (well, ok, took from the rich and gave to the poor ) or by Thaddeus fate (I mean, is it really fair? really? he’s in prison, and he’ll be who knows for how long if he’s ever found guilty, all because he discredited a magician? ), she simply smiles at Ruffalo because that’s her role, and the only reason she’s there.
Surprise surprise, but not really, the FBI guy was the one who put the magicians together and asked them to do all this, because Thaddeus ruined his father’s career forcing him to do a dangerous trick to regain popularity: he tried to free himself from a locked safe at the bottom of a river, but the safe was badly done by the safe-company so he couldn’t open it, the millionaire owned the insurance company that didn’t pay the insurance money, and the bank too, I don’t remember exactly how but it was involved.
Now, let’s get into this. Using tricks they actually robbed a French bank - even in Ocean’s eleven it wasn’t that easy - they stole the millionaire’s money simply hacking into his account because they knew his childhood pet’s name, they rob a safe simply putting a huge mirror in the warehouse so everyone thought there was no safe, and nobody saw them when they broke the mirror and actually robbed it, they pretended that one of them died pulling a kind of ‘fast and furious’ stunt, and they keep nothing for themselves, and then all they get is that the man who asked them to do it tells them that they are accepted into this “eye”, this secret society of magicians... which means what, that they are now ‘real magicians’ ? Doing real magic?
I mean, how does stepping onto a carousel make them real magicians? Is there anyone else in this society? What happens to them now? This FBI-Dylan had to be in it already if he could ‘accept’ them, so what, is he a ‘real’ magician too? Then why did he need them?
The real robberies were too easy, the reward unclear, their future unknown...
I could bear with all this for the first half of the movie, but after such an ending one simply feels played, made fun of; they tried to put together Ocean’s eleven, fast and furious and action-movies-chases, but it didn’t work.
The movie is not a complete fail only because they hired a lot of good/famous actors who caught the viewers attention.
