The number 23 - 2006

I love this film. Not sure why, it's a combination of things I guess: Jim Carrey was amazing, the film was thrilling, the plot interesting, the screenplay very good... only thing I didn't like? All that ranting and babbling about the number. I know it sounds stupid, given the title, but I actually love the film despite that, not because of that. I don't care about all that nonsense, I have no idea if you could or could not make 23 from my name, my address or whatever, I don't know, I never cared to try, because it's all nonsense. He went looking for it, trying in every way to get it, that's why he saw it. I mean, in a way everything that makes 23 also makes 5!
Jim Carrey plays Walter Sparrow. Walter works for animal control, he's  dog-catcher. Chasing after a dog, he gets late to meet his wife. Waiting for him, she enters a book shop and buys him a book "A novel of obsession. By Topsy Krett". He starts reading it: the protagonist calls himself Fingerling because he liked it when he read his stories as a child, and that's just the first of the many things Walter thinks he has in common with him. Fingerling is a detective, and one day he meets a blonde that tells him about the number 23; he becomes obsessed with that number, he's going crazy because of it. It goes so far that one day he murders his girlfriend and frames her lover for it.While reading it, Walter becomes obsessed with the number too, saying it has power, that it is everywhere in his life.
Big spoilers from now on, in case you wanna know. You've been warned.
He finds in the book a secret code that tells him where to dig: he goes there with his son Robin (Logan Lerman - Robin Sparrow :-/ he should sue his parents..) and finds human bones buried. He calls the police, but his wife Agatha (Virginia Madsen) has removed them to protect him. He guesses what she did, and becomes convinced that she wrote the book. She has no other choice than to confess to him what she had just learned: He is the author. He wrote it, he is Fingerling. Suddenly Walter remembers his life: the death of his mother, his father's suicide and his obsession with the number 23. He remembers when he met Laura and fell in love with her, now he remembers how she became her teacher's lover, how that make his father's obsession come back to haunt him, how he lost control after Laura told him she never loved him, that nobody could because he was pathetic. He killed her and buried her, unable to cope with what he had done he had tried to kill himself. Her lover came to her room to find the knife and all her blood and was arrested for her murder. Walter didn't die, but needed a long time to recover, and the trauma to the head had made him forget, or maybe it was just a self-preservation instinct kicking in. He forgot all about Laura, all about 23. Getting out of the hospital he met Agatha and started a new life. That book brought it all back, and now he feels like back at that day, unable to accept and go on, but this time he has a family, a son, and realises that his choice of suicide had been the wrong choice, that all this time an innocent man had been locked up in prison. This time it'll be different. They give Laura's remains a proper burial, and he turns himself in, freeing the poor innocent man, and tries to convince himself that 23 is just a number.
