Last Christmas - 2019

It’s not bad, but it’s sad. It should be a uplifting story of a girl finding herself and finding back her family and her history, putting herself together and all that, yes, but she does that thanks to someone else losing their life. It happens, that’s life too, it’s a good story, but it’s sad, really sad. A good movie for those that like to say “so good, I cried so much”.

About half way through, maybe less, it starts leaving hint of her heart condition and when you finally put it together you see that she’s become lost after she had her operation. She had a bad heart once, and everything moved around that, but since then she’s like lost, doesn’t know what’s the goal anymore.

Kate, who in 1999 was still singing in a church in Yugoslavia, in 2017 is walking the streets of London, and its pubs, totally lost but optimist, looking for a place to spend the night, and she finds Ed until the next morning his girlfriend throws her out.

Kate has accommodation issues because she’s “sort of run out of options” after she alienated all her friends.

She wants to be a singer but she works in a Christmas store as an elf for a woman named Santa.

She’s lovely, really. Santa is the best part of this. She is worried for Kate too: “you are going to run out of friends with sofas”, “you need to take care of yourself better”, and “I just don’t want you to drop dead in front of the customers. I don’t have enough tinsel to cover your corpse”

Kate sees a cute guy looking up at a bird, but when she looked too the bird pooed in her eye. So later when he invites her for a stroll she says no because he’s weird.

One night she’s late for an audition, and she does not lock up the door. She sings a cappella but they don’t like her.

She meets Tom again and have a walk around. A friend gives her another chance to let her sleep at her place, one last chance to be good and not “the most selfish woman in the world”, as Ruf said after some months earlier she burnt his matchstick galleon (she also killed someone’s fish once, she’s quite a disaster and doesn’t care). Not only did she take a guy home, but she carelessly breaks something Ruf made, again. So she’s out.

Someone wrecked the Christmas shop, her boss Santa tells the cops Kate locked up last night, but when they’re alone she knows Kate didn’t, she’s sure of it because she broke the window herself to at least get insurance. Kate doesn’t even try to deny it, she knows very well it’s true: “I can pay you back”…

Santa tells her she was great at her job once but now it’s like she doesn’t care about anything, but she gives her another chance because they’re all good in this movie.

She’s been avoiding her mother at all costs until now, but needs must, so she calls her dad for a drive home. Even him won’t get in the house as long as his wife is awake… she’s driving them all mental. Kate goes in to have a chance to sleep, she tries to, her mother talks a lot and even sings a lullaby. She takes Kate to see her doctor because she should take better care of her heart.

Tom takes her to the ice rink, and then he tells her to do something nice for Santa, so she brings Santa’s admirer in so they can talk, and they set a date.

Santa’s real name is Huang Qing Shin but Kate thought she was really called Santa…

Kate goes home again but a big family fight makes her go out again. At this point we learn that she had a heart transplant and after that nothing felt right for her anymore.

She struggles between trying to have a normal life and wanting to be special.

At Tom’s home, they talk and she expects to sleep with him but he just puts her to sleep alone.

She starts singing outside the homeless shelter to raise funds. She keeps looking for Tom but doesn’t see him for days, and when she finds him he tells her she can’t depend on him.

She’s trying to get her life back together and those words hurt her.

She tries to patch things up with her sister - at least she says sorry - and cuts it off a bit with the drinking too much and shagging random guys. She even spends time with her mother - and she sends her sister a big bottle of Amarone della Valpolicella :D

She tries to make peace with all her friends . She goes to Tom’s house only to find out that it’s for sale, and also that the previous owner died. Tom Webster died last Christmas and she got his heart. There was never anyone there, she was by herself… now she sees him again:

she “why can I feel you?”

“Because I’m a part of you. Take care of my heart”

“Yeah, I promise”

“It was always going to be yours one way or another”

Two weeks later, Kate has her whole family at the homeless shelter, everyone we know actually, for the show. She sings Last Christmas, in line with the George Michael them of the movie.

Now all her family gets along and is happy, Marta even brings home her girlfriend Alba.
