I rather liked this Julia-arc showing that Ethan found true love and not just the passion of a moment. I know we see her again in the next movie, the fourth, and I hoped the character will live on.
Ethan is a prisoner, with an explosive in his head. With him there’s a girl prisoner, and this guy Owen Davian wants the Rabbit’s Foot, and doesn’t believe Ethan saying he doesn’t know what it is, he thought he had delivered it already, so the guy kills the girl.
And we go back to see how he came to be in that situation.
Julia and Ethan are getting engaged. He has no parents anymore, she has no father. They’re partying with all her family, he gets a call and goes out to talk to John Musgrave. Ethan is not on active duty anymore, he trains new agents because family is important.
Agent Lindsay Farris disappeared while on a surveillance operation. His team will have Declan Gormley, Zhen Lei and Luther Stickell. Ethan meets them, they go to Berlin, get Lindsay out, but as they board their helicopter Lindsay’s head starts hurting, they put an explosive in her head, and it goes off five seconds before he can try to fry it with a defibrillator. Lindsay dies (the ‘explosion’ is all inside the head, nothing splatter happens).
Ethan goes back home but can’t tell Julia anything.
Debriefing, Mr Brassel now says that since Lindsay was captured, she wasn’t as capable as Ethan said she was. He says their operation was badly done and useless.
Ethan trained Lindsay himself and thought she was really good, and cleared her for active duty. Lindsay left something for him, a postcard with a microdot hidden, but Luther says it’s blank.
Zhen brought back from the mission two half burnt computers, and Benji still can recover something, and incredibly one of the few things is that Brassel’s invisible man, who nobody can fiind, will be in Rome shortly for a visit to the Vatican. Lucky, huh? Also, they learn the term “the rabbit’s foot” but they don’t know what it is.
Ethan goes to the hospital to meet Julia, who is a nurse, to tell her he’ll go away again, for two days, then to prove her that what they have is real they get married right there, with toy-rings but for real.
The mission is to go to the Vatican and kidnap Owen Davian. In Rome, Ethan and Declan fake a broken truck, a yellow Dnl one; they yell in Italian - lol, it was terrible, they wanted to do ‘the accent’, I’m afraid they pretended to be Italian :lol: - well, the man yelling back at them is Italian, with a Roman accent.
Ethan goes up and down the wall and enters the Vatican dressed as a priest.
Zhen is pretty good, but Declan pretending to be a real Italian was like lol
They make a mask of Davian’s face while Luther lectures Ethan on how people like them can’t have real relationships not knowing they’re already married.
So, they kidnap Davian and Ethan takes his place, then escapes thru the sewers before blowing up the car they were in.
On the plane back, Ethan tries to make him talk, but Davian is one sick f..k, evil and tough. While driving, to take Davian to headquarters, they can finally see Lindsay’s message video and she says that Davian is working with Brassel. Right after that, they’re attacked (a few good action scenes here) and a commando frees Davian.
(Now, explain to me why, while running this way Ethan took the small part of the bridge still standing, but then running the other way he chose to jump and lost time and didn’t make it in time…)
With Davian free, Ethan is worried about Julia. And Davian does go straight for her.
He has a man kidnap her and Ethan is too late.
Davian has her, and calls Ethan to tell him to get the location of the Rabbit’s foot from the briefcase Davian had in Rome, get the Rabbit’s foot and bring it to him.
He has only 48 hours, but he’s brought at the agency by force.
Brassel appears angry to have what he calls a “rogue agent” and wants him in a cell, but John gives him the means to escape telling him that he knows about Julia.
Ethan goes to Shanghai, where John told him to go, and the team reunites there - Musgrave told them.
Now they only have two hours before Julia is killed.
Sone insane stunts later, Ethan has the Rabbit’s foot, some biohazard thing, and Ethan phones Davian to make the exchange. Then he alerts Musgrave on tracking the thing.
Once they have Ethan, they put in him the same exploding charge they put in Lindsay.
Now we’re back to the opening scene.
Davian wants the rabbit’s foot, and Ethan doesn’t understand because he just brought it to him. The scene was actually all planned by the bad guys to make sure that Ethan brought the right thing, and now that he saw Davian shoot Julia, they are.
Musgrave comes in showing him that Davian’s translator was killed instead, she had a mask on. Julia is still alive.
John Musgrave is the one who told Davian that Lindsay was coming, it was him all along, and he made Lindsay believe it was Brassel. Ethan manages to free himself and knock John out, then calls Benji for tech support. Benji leads him to where Julia is kept.
Ethan finds her, but Davian is there, and activates the charge in his head, beats him up a bit and wants him to watch while he kills her. Ethan fights back at that point, and Davian ends up dead.
Julia asks questions but stops when he’s clearly in lots of pain. Ethan makes some kind of crude defibrillator and enlists her help, but then she’s alone with the gun he gave her, and she does it, she kills two men : Musgrave is the second.
Then she performs CPR on Ethan. It takes a while but he does come back.
IMF stands for Impossible Mission Force.
Ethan explains everything to Julia, and he has her meet his team while Brassel congratulates him.
Then, before going away on his honeymoon, he asks what the rabbit’s foot is: Brassel:“promise me you’ll stay, I’ll tell you” - “I’ll send you a postcard”-Ethan - “fair enough”
