Star Trek season 1

TOS the original series. Where the legend started.
I’ve seen all TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT series, although nothing after that…

The women in this have skirts so short that you can clearly see their underwear. Not if they stand still, but as soon as they move you clearly can. And they know it of course, so they wear it the same colour fo their uniform…

The cage - ITA lo zoo di talos

This must be the very first episode, the real pilot I think. It has Christopher Pike as captain, a woman as Number One, Spock as a scientific officer, and he’s not yet the real Spock we’re used to, he even smiles!

Pike on the other end is quite similar to Kirk, with a rather similar attitude.

The story is that the Enterprise receives a distress signal from a planet that should be deserted, and they deduce that a ship crashed there some twenty years before and there might be survivors still. Six of them go down on Talos to investigate and find a bunch of old men with a pretty blond girl, who they say was a child at the time. They all look very healthy.

I did not get the girl’s name, they say it more than once but it’s not clear if she’s Diva, Vina, Dina, or something else entirely, I don’t know.

We see that some creatures with really big heads, big brains, are watching everything that happens, with a close eye on Pike.

All of a sudden, the old men disappear and Pike is taken into some caves where the Talosians (I think it’s how you say it, but I might be wrong…) live. He finds himself in a cell, where his behaviour is monitored and studied.

The girl is there too, and the Talosians are clearly studying how he interacts with her, and if they can make him protective and fond of her.

She also wants him to chose her, saying she can be whatever he wants. Talosians are telepatic, but they also can make illusions real. The girl is human, from that ship that crashed, although from what Number One says she was not at all a baby at the time, and therefore she should not look like that now… maybe she read about theeople on the ship, she did her research…

The girl tells him that he could have whatever he wants there, that dreams can be real there, and Pike seems tempted because he was rather frustrated with his life at the beginning, tired of all the responsibilities of his role.

Still, he reacts strongly, not liking it one bit that those aliens are keeping him captured and toying with him.

The Talosians then bring down Number One and an Ensign that we had seen on the ship already - for some reason, Pike was annoyed any time he saw her, saying that when he’s on the bridge he doesn’t want to be disturbed, but if she’s there it’s for a reason, to give him reports that he asked for. He said he’s not used to women on the bridge, despite Number One being one.

It shows they’re not as ‘modern’ as one might have thought at first, seeing her at the wheel, so to speak. It seems Number One is rather the exception, as a woman who gained a high rank, and men are still rather deep in the macho culture. He might as well start punching his chest like an ape…

Anyway, Pike has now three women there, the Talosians want him to stay there and procreate, and they tell him to choose one of them, like the girls have no saying in it.

The blond is not happy about it, she wants him to stay with her.

Eventually, and rather abruptly, the Talosians stop their meddling, saying that no matter how golden the cage is, humans will keep fighting for their freedom and this makes them too aggressive. They have failed, this was their last hope…

and here is what I don’t understand. What does a couple of humans procreating have to do with the survival of the Talosians?

Anyway, Pike and his crew are now free to go, but when Pike asks the blond to go with them, she refuses, she says she can’t, and then she wants to show him her real appearance, and of course she’s not so young at all, but also she’s not that healthy either. She was dying when they found her, the only survivor, and her body was really in bad shape. They saved her life, but she says that they didn’t know humans at all and didn’t know what she should look like, so other than an old face she has a huge hump that makes her stay with her head on a side. By staying there, she can regain her beautiful appearance, and now a copy of Pike appears and it stays with her, going into the cave with her. This was apparently her dream and they made it true.

Pike and his crew leave the planet, there’s some silly moment when the Ensign asks who would have been Eva before she’s silenced and sent away by Number One who appears annoyed and maybe jealous.

Very annoying, this portraying of women fighting themselves for a man’s attention, but it was a long time ago after all. It was probably 1965 or earlier, I mean, they had to write and film this, show it, then change it all and come up with the approved crew that made The Original Series from 66 to 69, right?

2- The man trap
ITA trappola umana
Stardate 1513.1
They are on a planet where there’s ruins of long dead ciivlizations for “routine medical examination of archeologist Robert Crater and his wife Nancy”. Bones has a past with Nancy, but hasn’t seen her in ten years. We see right away that Bones (or Plum and she calls him), Kirk and this guy Darnell all see her differently.
Doctor Crater wants them to go away quickly, he says thtey only need salt, and Nancy asks for it too. Soon Darnell is found dead. The only wrong thing with him, what killed him ist that there is no more salt in his body.
//There’s a scene between Uhura and Spock, she tries to make concersation :lol//
Kirk says he doesn’t like mysteries.
To check if that’s really salt, Bones licks it… not really a safe procedure, is it?
Sturgeon is the next one dead, then Green, but we see Nancy turning into Green so they don’t notice at first and beam ‘him’ on board.
‘He’ walks around looking hungry and sees Janice bringing Sulu a tray with his lunch. (That flower is so obviously a hand covered with this plant-gloce  )
To Uhura she appears like a black man speaking Swahili, and then she kills a man on board before turning back into Nancy and going to McCoy. He took pills to sleep so she turns into McCoy without killing him first. Now Spock finds Green’s dead body and realises there’s an intruder on board. This creature is the last of its kind, the only one left. Nancy understood, she died killed by that creature. Now Crater has feelings for her, she’s been his only companion for many months. And yet ‘Nancy’ kills him too. Spock has different blood cells so he’s ok, but then she attacks Kirk. Spock is not armed, so he hits Nancy until McCoy understands that it’s not the woman he knew and shoots. it turns into quite an ugly creature, I’m sorry to say.

3- Charlie X
ITA Il naufrago delle stelle
1533.6 The captain of another ship, the Antares, comes “with an unusual passenger, young castaway Charlie Evans”
There are 428 people on the Enterprise.
As soon as the Antares leave Charlie here, they’re in a hurry to go away. Charlie seems to have never seen a girl before. He’s been alone since he was three, now he’s 17 and upset that they didn’t like him on the other ship. Spock is curious about Thasians because Charlie survived on Thasus, “the sole survivor of a transport crash 14 years ago”, so he thinks they might still exist.
//This is the episode when Spock plays music for Uhura to sing “all round the starship Enterprise there’s someone who’s in Satan guise, whose devil ears and devil eyes could rip your heart from you. At first his look could hypnotize and then his touch would barbarize, his alien voice would victimize and rip your heart from you. And that’s why female astronauts oh very female astronauts wait terrified and overwrought to find what he will do. Oh girls in space be wary be wary be wary, girls in space be wary we know now what he’ll do” and he just keeps playing the music with an air of indulgent patience  //
Charlie comes for Janice; when she asks Uhura starts singing about Charlie this time, nice things, but he makes her voice go away, even Spock’s music, so he can play magic tricks and have Janice and everyone’s attention.
(It’s quite annoying that neither Janice or Kirk are able to explain to Charlie why he can’t go around slapping girls on their behind, is it really so hard to understand? Would he like it if an unknown man slapped his bum??? Just keep your hands to yourself!)
The Antares now tries to warn them of something, and the next moment there’s only debris left. Its 20 men are now dead.
Kirk beats Spock at chess, but Charlie gets quite upset when he loses in just a few moves, and he burns the chess pieces. Charlie makes a big speech to Janice about her being the only one so Kirk tries to talk to him about leaving her alone but he gets upset, saying he can’t do anything right, and can’t accept that he can’t have Janice…
When he trains with Kirk and a man laughs, Charlie makes him vanish, and then he vanishes the security men’s weapons. He has Thasians powers. He takes control of some ship instruments because he doesn’ want them to change course, he wants to reach Colony 5. he also takes control of Spock making him say silly things, he turns the 17 year-old crew girl into an iguana or something, and vanishes Janice when she refuses him. Now he tells Kirk that they must be nice to him or he’ll hurt them, and when they try to imprison him he says “that wasn’t nice. You’ll be sorry. You wait. You’ll see. You’ll be sorry you did that”
He turns a girl old and makes a few people’s faces go away. Nobody’s safe. Kirk thinks that if he’s now taking control of the whole ship, one as big as this, it may be that he’s reaching his limit, so they give him lots of things to think about, turning lots of things on… but nothing would be enough or that easy, luckily the Thasians come to take him back. Now he begs Kirk to let him stay, calls them friends… Janice reappars and everyone turns back as they once were, but as far as I know the Antares is still destroyed…
The Thasian says that they gave him power so he could survive, but if they were to take him he would use it to destroy them. So the Thasian takes him away on their ship. Janice cries for him.

4-Where no man has gone before
ITA oltre la galassia
There is no McCoy here, the doctor is dr. Mark Piper.
1312.4 They picked up “a recorded distress signal, the call letters of a vessel which has been missing for over two centuries”.
Spock speaks of “your human emotions” and says that one of his ancestors married a human female.
They intercept a small vessel, more of an object, and bring it aboard. They’re approaching galaxy edge… The object has the recorded messages. We see Scotty at ‘engineering division’.
Dr Elizabeth Dehner is a psychiatrist, Mr Gary Mitchell is a commander at the helm.
Something happened on the Valiant that made the captain destroy his own ship. Now the Enterprise encounters a force field or something, it looks like a purple line, but it brings trouble. There’s fires, and both Dehner and Mitchell are affected, the camera freezes on their faces with that yellow light that means electricity, and they fainted for a bit. Now the ship has only impulse power. 8 or 9 people died. Only these two survived, and both had high ESP levels. Now his eyes are different, like lightning inside them. Now Gary can read difficult books very very quickly and he remembers every word. She calls him “a mutated superior man”. Sulu explains how quickly he’s evolving, and they’re all worried. Spock suggests killing him right away.
They go to Delta Vega to repair the engines and leave Mitchell there. Mitchell proves Spock right becoming dangerous right away - and yet Kirk stops him with a punch… - and talking of what planet he can use, and that he feels like a God… they put him in a cell, but he keeps getting stronger.
When he spends too much energy, he comes back to himself (normal eyes) but it doesn’t last long. Now Dehner has the same eyes. Mitchell killed Mr Kelso and now they walk this planet together. Kirk wants to stop him by himself, he feels guilty because Spock was right. Kirk uses his combat training :p and also talks to Elizabeth, to the psychiatrist still in her. She looks at him while he forces Kirk to kneel and pray to him as to a God, and plans to kill him, so she turns on him. They use those electrical shocks on each other, and when his eyes are normal again Kirk fights him, but he hesitates to kill him and the powers are back. Kirk manages to have rocks fall on him, and also for him ot be buried in the grave he had made for Kirk… and that seems to be enough… God-like powers, and this is enough to get rid of him…
For some reason she dies, no idea why.
They go away and write nothing of what happened on their records, saying they died doing their duty, and that’s it.

5- The naked time
ITA Al di là del tempo
They are on a frozen planet to do scientific research, to see why the researchers there are all dead, sitting at their desks, showering fully clothed… and the guy with Spock is so stupid as to take off his protective glove to touch his nose and also the desk, the idiot.
1704.2 Spock has green blood, a pulse of 242, and blood pressure almost non existent, which is normal for him. To eat, they put a card in the slot and a tray materializes with what you wanted.
This guy Joe (the idiot from above) has constant irritation at his hand; he starts acting crazy, and when he tries to stab himself Sulu and another one try to stop him but he gets hurt anyway. And now their hands hitch too.
Christine assists McCoy during Joe’s operation. He dies and McCoy can’t understand why. Uhura takes Kevin Riley’s place when he starts acting weird. Riley touches Christine. Sulu goes around shirtless and fencing, acting like a moskettier. To Uhura: “I’ll protect you, fair maiden” Uhura: “sorry, neither”
Then Spock uses his pinch to knock him out. Riley takes control of the engines and keeps singing the same Irish song again and again, making Kirk crazy, until they finally get to him. Christine takes Spock’s hand in hers and tells him that she’s in love with him, that she loves both his human half and his Vulcan half, just as he is. He says he’s in control of his emotion but he can feel it getting difficult. To her he says “I’m sorry” then he hides in a briefing room and cris. He struggles to control his emotions but fails.
Riley also stopped the engines, causing more troubles. McCoy is quick to discover that the planet’s water mutated into something that takes away all self control, and he finds a cure. Kirk finds Spock crying because he never told his mum that he loved her, and he also tells Kirk how scared he is of their friendship… but Kirk needs him now, because his brain is quicker… but he’s been touched too, and can’t cope, he starts washing poetry about his love for… the ship… and seeing him like that makes Spock start to function more normally. (Nobody here acted crazy-drugged like Shatner )
McCoy is ready on the bridge to inject everyone passing through. Spock’s calculations make the engines start, and they’re all: we did it! Success, but surprise, the engines have gone crazy and they’re going too fasst, “faster than is possible for normal space” aaaaand… they’re going back in time! They’re back 71 hours, but still on the ship, they’re not going to relive it all of course.
There is Christine, Janice, Scotty, Bones.

6- The enemy within
ITA il duplicato
(This will happen to Riker too. I’m not fond of either episode)
1672.1 They’re on a planet, but when a man Fisher is beamed up, he’s covered in some substance because he fell, and right after him it’s Kirk’s turn. He’ dizzy and Scott goes with him, so nobody notices a second Kirk appearing…
Scotty shows them an animal that they brought up, and also the duplicate that appeared right after the first. They have opposite characters, one all quiet and peaceful and the other aggressive. Kirk2 attacks Janice Rand who fights back. Kirk2 also went to McCoy to get brandy, so Spock now is confused, because Kirk1 denies both instances. For us it’s now easy because Kirk2 is full of scratches.
Can I say how annoying this next bit is? :
Janice tells her story, repeats many times that it was Kirk and everything he said, but Kirk keeps repeating that it wasn’t him, then Fisher comes in saying that yes, ‘it was him, he knows what he’s saying’, and now they believe it. The girl saying she’d been assaulted, they think she’s wrong or too emotional to know what she’s saying, but as a man says it, okay then! GRRRR
Luckily we have Spock: of course there must be an imposter aboard. Poor Sulu and his team are still on the planet because Scotty must check the transporter before he can safely beam them up. He and his men are freezing on that planet, repairs might take too long…
Kirk can’t make decisions as he did before, he’s losing the ability. Kirk2 uses makeup to cover the scratches, and he also has the yellow shirt, while Kirk1 has the green and gold one.
When they’re face to face, kirk1 is all “you can’t kill me, I’m a part of you” but the other is about to shoot when Spock stops him with the Vulcan pinch. Spock likes this chance to study the human behaviour, good and evil.
The split Kirks are no good separated, but when they try to put the spit animals back together, the shock killed it. Spock thinks that Kirk’s mind will protect him and it would work, but McCoy has doubts and for Kirk to make the decision is really hard, but Sulu and the others are dying. Kirk2 takes control of the ship though, for just a moment because Kirk1 appears “can half a man live?” Then Kirk2 cries that he wants to live and Kirk1 hugs him, and they try the transporter and come back just one person, same old Kirk, so they hurry to bring up the others. At the end, Spock has his most hateful scene, probably, he tells Janice “the, uh, imposter had some interesting qualities, wouldn’t you say, yeoman?” As if he was some charming seductor and not an aggressive, violent man! Disgusting.

7- Mudd’s women
ITA il filtro di Venere
1329.8 They’re chasing a mall vessel with no registration. It won’t answer their call. When this cargo ship is in danger, they shield it. One man, Captain Leo Walsh, is brought aboard and then three beautiful women too, right before their ship explodes. The women are ‘the cargo’, and all men are enchanted. Not Spock of course.
The ship has only one Lithium crystal left and is in trouble, so they head to Rigel-12 to get more.
The computer can tell when someone lies, so he admits to be Harcourt Fenton Mudd with a past of smuggilng and stuff. He says he’s bringing wives for some settlers. Ruthie and Magda and Evie are their names. Now Mudd wants to marry them to the rich miners of Rigel-12. Mudd refused to have them examined by a doctor but when the brunette visits McCoy his machine goes crazy. Mudd sent them to get informations, but when Evie should seduce Kirk, she says she hates it and then she feels ill. Mudd contacts the three miners on Rigel-12 and gives the girls the pill that makes them beautiful. When Kirk offers to pay the miner for the crystals, they say that they want Mudd’s women in exchange.
At first Evie refuses to collaborate then she acts more kindly but he doesn’t find her beautiful anymore. Now Kirk has Mudd explain about the Venus drugs which is illegal. The other two got married during the night and this third miner acts all cheated! Evie is angry, what they want it’s not real, but she takes the drug to show them how it is…only it was a fake pill, she was only feeling confident… so now the girls stay but Kirk gets his crystals.

8- What are little girls made of?
ITA gli androidi del dottor Korby
We’re told that Kirk has a brother, Sam, who has a wife and three kids.
2712.4 Planet Exo-III. Five years since Roger Korby’s last message. Spock thought nothing could survive what’s left of this planet.
Korby and part of his expedition remained alive because they found ruins left by the former inhabitants of the planet. Apparently Christine was engaged to this Roger once, and she now goes down with Kirk. Also two security men, red shirts that die shortly after. They soon learn that the man Brown is an android, as well as the beautiful, half naked girl Andrea. The giant Ruk is also an android, but he was already there, not created by Roger, and he’s programmed to protect him and his work, and becase of this he killed the two men. Now Korby creates an android identical to Kirk, even with the same mind and memories - for this reason Kirk thought badly of Spock, so that he may be able to understand, and it happens as planned. The android Kirk  goes on the ship and quite cordially tells him to mind his own business and that he’s “sick of your half-breed interference”. Roger wants another planet to continue his work, his experiments, he likes the idea of superior humanity without greed or hate where nobody ever dies.
Kirk starts one of his usual tactics, to manipulate the machines minds. He managed to turn Ruk against Roger so Roger has to destroy him. During a fight with Kirk, Roger is hurt and they see that he’s a machine as well. He was dying so he transferred all of himself into an android. Kirk also tried his tactics with Andrea, kissing her forcefully to seduce her :-/ so now she sees android-Kirk who won’t kiss her so she destroys him - shoot once and they’re gone, vanished, dangerous weapons they use…
She’s shocked to realize she killed the android and not the real one. So Kirk tries it with Korby too, his perfect world right here, where they’re killing each other like it was nothing… and now somehow Andrea tells Korby that she loves him, kisses him and uses her weapon to kill the both of them… and now Spock arrives to take them back.
Nurse Christine has decided to saty on board (the stardate puts this after all the previous episodes but we’ve seen Christine before… I mean, it seemed like this was her first time on the ship, come to find Korby, but… it’s not, or is it?…)

9- Miri
ITA Miri
2713.5 A small planet is launching an Earth-style distress signal, where there shouldn’t be humans. It’s another Earth, it’s identical. It looks like 1960s Earth, but kind of abandoned, there is nobody around. They get attacked by a sick man with the mind of a child who dies right after, apparently of age, like he aged a century in a few minutes. They find Miri, a little girl afraid of them who explains that a plague has killed all the adults.
Kirk flirts with her :-/
Kirk, McCoy, Janice and two security men came here, and they’re all showing signs of the plague. Spock doesn’t. McCoy studies it The people on this planet were making esperiments on life prolongation. It all happened 300 years ago. The plan was that people would age a month every 100 years. Now they understand that these children are very old. Another one dies, a girl. As they reach puberty, they get sick. Miri only has 5 or 6 weeks left, and the children only a few months because there’s no more food, they say… you mean the adults left enough food that lasted 300 years…and it’s running out…
Miri is jealous seeing Kirk confort Janice and so he has the children take her. Miriis getting sick too, she has the blue spots.
(The leader of the children looked older than McCoy…)
Miri has Jim talk to the children, but they hit him instead. He plays his mind games with him oo, but McCoy’s mind, altered by the disease, can’t wait for him to get the communicators back and he tries the vaccine on himself. it works like magic, they see the blue sts vanish under their eyes.
Kirk leaves a medical team here, and has “contacted space central, they’ll send teachers, advisers” and then he goes away on his ship. Miri loved him, but “I never get involved with older women, yeoman” he says, which is rather cruel to say, poor little girl, and also rather sexist, I always hated this ending.

10- Dagger of the mind
ITA Trasmissione di pensiero
2715.2 They exchange stuff with a penal colony, but inside the box they receive there is a man. They’re warned that a dangerous man can’t be found. Well, here is quite easy to find him, since he comes on the bridge himself, to ask asylum, and beg that they won’t send him back to Tantalus. He struggles to speak. Bones is quite perplexed, and suspicious of what famous doctor Adams tells them about him. So Kirk goes donw with someone wiht psychiatric and penology experience… of course this Dr Noel is a woman, and one Kirk already knows…
I don’t like her, she speaks like she feels superior or something, like she knows and understands and Kirk can’t because he’s not a psychiatrist. Also she blindy trusts this dr Adams.
Spock uses “an ancient Vulcan technique to probe into Van Gelder’s tortured mind” because he needs to know if Kirk is in danger or not. He touches the face and speaks like he were to hypnotise him, there is no ‘my mind to your mind’ here, and then Van Gelder speaks saying “we are” and “our memories” while speaking of himself. He says that the neural neutralizer is used to erase the memories and reshape the mind, put new thoughts in there…
Kirk and Helen Noel try the neural neutralizer to see what it can do, but Adams arrives and hurts him, raisign the intensity. Kirk will tell Helen to enter the air conditioning conduits to find the circuits and bring down their shields… it’s quite easy, there’s a big bar with high voltage written there, to pull down towards the off… so Spock can come down. Adams was left alone in the neural neutralizer’s room when the power was turned on again, with the machine at full power, so he’s dead now. Of loneliness, they say, because his mind was totally empied.

11- The corbomite maneuver
ITA L’espediente della carbonite
The Enterprise finds a strange thing coming towards them, it’s a colorful cube floating in space :p
1512.2 Kirk was doing his “quaterly physical check” so Spock was acting captain. The cube blocks their way, moving with them.
McCoy: “what am I, a doctor or a moon shuttle conductor?”
(For some reason, 1593 meters become 15000km in Italian… maybe they confused 15 hundred with 15 thousands but still…or did I confuse numbers…)
Mr Bailey at the helm votes for destroying it. If they move, the cube moves too and gives out radiations, so eventually Kirk fires at it and destroys it. Soon another thing shows up. Like a huge ball covered in yellow strass. From there a man says they “trespassed into our star systems”, this Balok of the First Federation (whatever that is) says that they ignored the warning buoy and even destroyed it, proving they have no peaceful intentions. Balok gives them ten minutes or something before they’ll be destroyed. Minutes go by and then Kirk tells Balok that every Earth vessel has a substance incorporated into them, corbomite, who can prevent any attack, and send it back to destroy the aggressor. So Balok tows them along instead of destroying them. While moving, it looks like 4 or 5 balls of yellow light.
They break free but now Balok asks for help, his ship is in trouble, so Kirk, McCoy and Bailey board the ship. Balok is not the scary face they saw on the screen, he’s more like a child. He’s totally amiable now, saying he just wanted to understand their intentions. He is alone on his ship, doesn’t need anybody but he feels lonely, so he asks if one of them might stay for some time, to exchange informations and learn of their culture. Kirk sort of volunteers Bailey, but he seems happy to volunteer himself.

12- The menagerie part I
ITA L’ammutinamento: parte 1
They arrive at Starbase 11; the commodore wants to know why, Kirk says he was ordered to come. Spock says he received a message from captain Pike, but it seems impossible because he was the victim of radiation that left him not only disfigured but much more importantly he’s locked inside a sort of cage-chair and can’t talk. The only thing he can do is bip once for yes or twice for no. He only talks to Spock, who says that he must do it, even if it’s mutiny he has it all planned out already. Pike tries to stop him by bipping several times, but Spock is determined. Of course Pike wants to protect him, but Spock has made up his mind.
The commodore insists no message was sent, but Kirk believes Spock. We see Spock giving orders to the Enterprise using Kirk’s voice (recorded of course). McCoy says that Vulcans can’t lie and it’s impossible that Spock could do it.
Info on Talus 4 are top secret, and it’s forbidden to go there. Then McCoy is needed on board, Pike disappears and the ship moves away. The Enterprise is guided by the computer so the men don’t know where they’re going, Spock is in command and wants total radio silence, and he needed McCoy because captain Pike is on board and must take care of him. Kirk and Commodore Mendez are following them on a shuttlecraft. Kirk keeps following, and does not have enough fuel to get safely back.
Spock will have to face a court martial of course, but what’s worse the punishment for going to Talos 4 is death. Now Spock beams Kirk and Mendez aboard, and surrenders himself on charge of mutiny. Of course the helm does not respond, Spock made it so they’ll have to go to Talos IV.
3012.4 There’s a hearing on Spock’s behaviour on the Enterprise but he waives counself and also “waives rights to this hearing and request immediate court martial”. He planned it well and knows his stuff, so they do it. A general court-martial with Kirk, Mendez and Pike, and he pleads guilty.
Mendez asks him why so he tells them about 13 years ago, when Pike was the Enterprise’s captain and Spock the science officer (and a brunette Majel Barrett at the helm was number one). We see scenes from the pilot and then scenes from the court martial, and it ends with kirk being esonerated because they’re receiving a transmission from Talos IV (that’s how he can show them the ‘episode’) which is forbidden, but Spock still refuses to free the ship.

13- Menagerie part 2
ITA L’ammutinamento parte 2
3013.1 Spock pleads guilty to everything, as we know, and we go on seeing the pilot episode. They find him guilty, but they also have to see the pilot to the end, and once it has ended, the Talosians reveal that Mendez was never on board, it was not a real court martial, and Spock is no more under arrest. Mendez has sent his approval from the Starbase, and Kirk sees on screen that Pike is again young and healthy with Vina on Talos IV, just as the pilot ending.
(… so, did Spock lie or there was really a message?  why did mendez send his approval? When was he informed of what was going on? Lots of holes in this story, if anyone cares)

14- The conscience of the king
ITA La magnificenza del re
They’re watching a play, Macbeth, and Thomas next to Jim says the leading man is Kodos the executioner.
2817.6 He preteded to have invented a new synthetic food to lure Kirk here. Kirk thinks back on Kodos who 20 years ago caused many deaths on the colony of Tarsus IV, and the computer has no informations on actor Anton Karidian prior to 20 years ago when Kodos presumably died, so he arranges to be the only one who can take the company of actors to their next destination
2818.9 Tom Leighton is found dead. On the ship there’s another man who can identify Kodos, lt Kevin Riley. All the other witnesses are dead, only Kirk and Riley remain, and these actors were always around when they died. Now we see that someone put something in Riley’s milky drink, but McCoy saves him. (We saw a hand covered in glove with a cleaner spray bottle )
Kirk didn’t say anything to the crew but Spock finds out by himself. There’s also an attempt on Kirk’s life. The actors perform Hamlet for the crew. Now Riley wants to kill the man who killed his parents, but Kirk stops him. And overhears Karidian’s daughter confessing to her father that she killed 7 men already so that they could no more hurt him, and when she tries to shoot Kirk he takes it instead and dies. She cries recitiing Shakespeare.

15- Balance of terror
ITA La navicella invisibile
Earth outposts are not answering. Kirk performs the marriage betweenyellow-shirts Angela Martine and Robert Tomlinson… but a red alarm stops it :-/ Outpost 4 is under attack.
1709.2 These are the outposts “guarding the neutral zone between planets Romulus and Remus and the rest of the Galaxy”. The neutral zone was established by a treaty after the Earth-Romulan conflict of over a century ago. Outposts 2 and 3 and 8 have been destroyed. They watch as a vessel appears and destroys outpost 4 too. Somehow () they can watch inside that ship and see the Romulans. Mr Stiles has lost family against the Romulans (so long ago though, right? It’s just history) and now after seeing them he suspects Spock :-/ Stiles wants to attack while they’re still in the neutral zone where they shouldn’t be, and Spock agrees. Kirk can’t get them soon enough so he prepares to enter the neutral zone if necessary.
The Romulan ship has no more fuel, no energy, but instead of letting his crew be rescued by Kirk he destroys his own ship. Spock saves Siles’ life even after he was a jerk to him, and the Enterprise had only one victim, Tomlinson died, the guy who should have gotten married.

16- Shore leave
They’re all tired and McCoy recommends rest, a shore leave that Kirk will authorize.
3025.3 A uninhabited planet which looks like Earth, so beautiful, yet Kirk didn’t intend to go down, and neither did Spock. Then Bones tells them that he saw a large rabbit checking his watch because he was late - he had just mentioned Alice in Wonderland to Sulu, and indeed he saw Alice as well.
Kirk laughs at this but Spock gets him with a trick so he’s forced to go down too - always love smart Spock. When Kirk sees the giant rabbit footprints, he confiines the crew to the ship and investigates. Sulu finds a gun he always wanted in his collection and scares them by shooting, a bit of target practice. Kirk mentions a guy he knew at the academy, and not a minute later this Finnegan appears in front of him… then the girl Barrow yells and cries because some kind of brutal Don Juan attacked her, and she was just thinking of being in a charming man’s arms. Then Kirk meets Ruth, a girl of his past, it’s been 15 years. Barrows thinks of a beautiful dress and she finds one on a tree. McCoy flirts with her. She wears the dress. Bones: “I’m a doctor. When I peek, it’s in the line of duty”
A man and a woamn hide from a tiger, Rodriguez sees a flock of birds, Sulu is attacked by a samurai… Bones talks of a knight who defends the princess (himself) and then he sees a knight he should battel but he thinks it’s just a hallucination and the knight kills him… Barrow cries a lot, Sulu sees the knight is just a dummy, not alive. An ancient war plane shoots Angela. McCoy’s body disappears. Finally Spock could speak the solution but Kirk doesn’t listen. We endure 5 or 6 long minutes of play-fight with Finnegan and then Kirk knows the answer too. They meet who or what they think about. Barrow wears the uniform again and it’s not torn anymore. Kirk orders them to think of nothing, and a man appears: “the caretaker of this place”, which is like an amusement park for everyone.
McCoy reappears all cured, with a girl at each arm, until Barrow wants to be the only one. Now the shore leave is authorized and they all enjoy it.
Spock stays on the ship.

17- The Galileo Seven
ITA La galileo
2821.5 Spock pilots the shuttlecraft Galileo with six other people. Troubles happen and they land, all alive but unable to communicate with the ship. There’s a lot of complaining about Spock’s logical attitude, which is very annoying because these men would prefer to… what? Yell and despair instead of think clearly? Spock is the only one with a bit of sense.
Two men die against a sort of giant primitive drive. They all blame Spock who ‘feels’ bad for misjudging the hostile’s reaction. Scotty is the only one rational enough to do what’s necessary and work. Also the only girl among them is gladly calm enough to do her job. Kirk must stop the search because he has an important mission to deliver important medicines, and the Galileo manages to fly, but not for long. The enterprise beams them up just before it burns, so five people have been saved. (Well, they lost someone in the search parties too, of course). They make fun of Spock at the end :-/

18- The squire of Gothos
ITA Il cavaliere di Gothos
Suddenly Sulu and Kirk disappear from the ship.
2124.5 After they see an uncharted planet, McCoy and two men go there to investigate. Planet Gothos. They meet weird general Trelane who refuses to let them go. His powers are great, and when Spock brings them back on board he’s quite annoyed. Now he brings down a few more people, until Kirk destroys a mirror that hid an important machine and he gets angry. As fasst as they try to go away, this planet Gothos is always in front of them. Kirk goes back donw  and is put on trial (this squire must be a Q…). Trelane wants to hang him and then they have a sword fight but Kirk refuses to admit defeat and Trelane starts pouting until two beings, a male and a female voice, talk to him as if he was a child and take him back because he doesn’t know how to treat and take care of his pets…

19-
ITA Arena
3045.6 They should meet a commodore at an outpost on Cestus 3 but find the place in ruins, and also under attack. The ship is too. They manage to cannon once blindly ahead and whoever was shooting at them stops - only two dead. They follow the alien ship retreating. Kirk wants to destroy them, but they’re stopped by some powerful beings that call themselves the Metrons, very upset at all this violence, so they send both ship’ captains to an asteroid where they will fight each other; the loser will die with everyone on  his ship. The Gorn looks like a big lizard. They fight and then Kirk builds a rudimental firearm and shoot him, but when the Gorn is down he refuses to kill him so one of the Metrons appears looking like a young angel and spares them both. The Gorn attacked because the outposts were in their territory and they were protecting it.

20- Tomorrow is yesterday
ITA Domani è ieri
3113.2 A black star dragged the Enterprise into it, and when they pulled away they were above Earth, where they were going, but in the late 1960s before the moon launching. Earth sends a pilot to see this Ufo that appeared on their machines, and the enterprise beams him on board, not sure why really, but the Enterprise’s engines are having problems so it couldn’t just disappear. Captain John Christopher is quite surprised to see Earth people from the future, a future where Earth is united and even more so to see that they do have an alien with pointy ears, but he’s also very pissed off when Kirk tells him he has to stay because going back to Earth and say what he learn could seriously change the future. Could they bring him with them to the future? Kirk says he’d be useless. Bones: “maybe he could be retrained, reeducated”
Kirk: “now you’re sounding like Spock” - Bones: “well, if you’re gonna get nasty, I’ll leave”
But captain Christopher has a family. Spock told them Christopher’s disappearance from Earth would not impact the future, but now he says they need to send him back because he’ll have a son who will become a colonel who “will lead the first successful Earth-Saturn probe”. This son Sean has not been born yet, so if he doesn’t go back he’ll never be.
Kirk and Sulu go down to retrieve all pictures and recordings that Christopher’s people got from his plane after it crashed, and get busted by a sergeant who takes their belts, one communicator and a bag. When he opens the communicator he’s beamed up, so now they have two unwanted passengers. Somehow the sergeant is beamed up with only his gun and the communicator that he opened, so Kirk and Sulu noww have the bag and the rest back. Sulu manages to go up but Kirk is taken. Spock, Sulu and Christopher go down to get him back. They do. Spock and Scotty’s plan is to move towards the sun, thus going back in time enough that nothing will have happened for Christopher ,and then move forward towards their future… it’s a bit absurd, they transport each of the tow men into their own body before they saw anything, and then go home…

21- Court martial
ITA Corte marziale
2947.3 A man died on the Enterprise and according to the computer Kirk did something wrong that caused his death. He “had to jettison the pod” where this Lt was because they were on red alert, terrible storm, he waited till the last possible moment… only it seems he did it before the red alert, so there’s a court martial.
At Starbase 11. Many men are now against him. Areel Shaw is an old friend, a beautiful woman. Bones: “All of my old friends look like doctors, all of his look like you”
The Lt’s daughter calls him a murderer, Kirk insists the signal was red, but people say the computer can’t lie. Areele is a Lt and a lawyer and gives him advice. She can’t defend him because she works for the prosecution, but she recommends a good lawyer: Samuel T. Cogley. Samuel is a book fanatic, I love that. Lt Shaw calls three people one after the other, including Spock and McCoy, and Cogley doesn’t ask anything. He wants Kirk to speak, and then we see what happened, the computer recordings… and both Kirk and Cogley see it, according to the computer he made a mistake. The Lt’s daughter now changes her attitude and hopes Kirk makes it.
Spock checks again, and plays chess against the computer, and keeps winning, because the computer had been altered. Only a few people could do it, and Lt Finney was one of them, so they realize he didn’t die after all, he planned it to ruin Kirk because he blames him for his own lack of career. Because years ago Kirk reported a mistake Finney made, slowing down his promotion by far.

22- The return of the Archons
ITA Il ritorno degli arconti
3156.2 “Orbiting planet Beta 3 trying to find some trace of the Starship Archon that disappeared here a hundred years ago”. Sulu and O’Neil go down, Sulu comes back muttering about Paradise and Landru, so they go down too: Kirk, McCoy and Spock, plus three men. The people there are vacant, walking mindlessly, until 6pm then it’s “festival” and people outdoors go crazy, yell, break stuff, hug and whatever… and Tula is at the center of it. It goes on all night until 6am when everybody suddenly stills and then they go back to their vacant expressions. Tula comes home crying her heart out. Her father didn’t do anything because the festival was the Will of Landru, and Kirk’s men not attending it means they’re not “of the body”, which is a terrible thing, apparently. Tula’s dad Reger asks if they’re Archons, if so they should be hidden from the Lawgivers… when they arrive saying they must be absorbed into the body, Kirk refuses to follow them, they’re caught so off guard that ghey don’t know what to do. Regen Offers to take them to safety, but midwalk they see the people freeze and then pick up stones and woods against them, because Landru summoned the body… They see O’ Neil again but he’s been absorbed. Landru pulled the Starship Archon down, and is now trying it with the Enterprise. Landru’s projected image appears to say they’ll be absorbed and enjoy this world without wars or crime. McCoy is absorbed. Then it’s Kirk’s turn, and then Spock’s, but they’re not absorbed because a man helps, a man against Landru like Reger. There was a time when there were wars here, then Landru brought them to a simpler time of peace… but 6000 years have passed, and now Landru is a machine. Indeed Kirk now goes on again with his mind games, playing logic against a computer and winning. He convinces the machine that it’s doing harm, that it’s evil, and its prime directive is to destroy evil, so it destroys itself. The ship is now free and they go away, leaving behind a sociologist with some experts to help the people there.
Kirk: “you would make a splendid computer, Mr Spock.”  Spock; “That is very kind of you, captain”
It was all very nice, this theory of peace and tranquillity, but it did not explain the festival…

23- Space seed
ITA Spazio profondo
3141.9 Far into space, an old Earth vessel is found, S.S. Botany Bay. There’s no data on it because in mid-1990s (200 years ago) there was the last world war, the Eugenics Wars. Kirk, McCoy, a girl and Scotty go on the vessel to investigate. Bones: “I signed aboard this ship to practice medicine, not to have my atoms scattered back and forth across space by this gadget”.
They find people still alive “after centuries of travel”, in “suspended animation”; Scotty turns the lights on and by doing this the leader starts to wake up, but it’s malfunctioning and he’d die if they don’t get him out, so Kirk just breaks the glass and opens it manually and he wakes up. The others are still asleep: 12 died of malfunctioning, 72 are alive. 30 of them are women, although I don’t know why it needed to be specified.
This girl McGivers is so enamored by this man of another time, this leader with such a strong personality, that she ends up begging him to let her stay and lets him hurt her hand until she kneels in front of him, and she even promises to help him take the ship… independence and a career should have helped this woman grow some self-confidence and self-worth, but no…
He calls himself Khan, Spock finds him on file: “Khan Noonien Singh, from 1992 through 1996 absolute ruler of more than a quarter of your world, from Asia through the Middle East”.
Khan and his men were a sort of super-men, stronger, braver, more ambitious and daring… the product of controlled genetcs. Just one man outside his door is nothing and he gers out easily, and McGivers helps transport him onto his ship where he wakes everyone up. He takes full control of the Enterprise, and it’s only when he almost kills Kirk and his man beats Uhura that McGivers finally finds herself again, at least a little bit, she still likes him. She saves Kirk so he and Spock regain the Enterprise. Instead of prison or other stuff, Kirk drops all charges and leaves Khan and his me in the Ceti Alpha star system where it’s planet number 5 is habitable but savage. McGivers chooses to go with him.

24- A taste of armageddon
ITA una guerra incredibile
3192.1 A diplomatic mission to open friendship relations, but Eminiar VII replies not to approach, never, but Mr Fox insists because he wants to have an outpost in this area at all costs (things have not changed at all in all these years, huh, there’s still full of Mr Foxs everywhere who won’t stop at silly diplomatic reason when they want something even at the cost of a war, especially if that war does not touch them personally…)
He can order Kirk to approach, so Kirk has no choice. Eminiar VII (or Eminian) has an advanced society, the first contact happened more than 50 years ago, when it was at war with its neighbour planet. Kirk and Spock go down with two men and a woman in red shirts. Mea3 is there to ‘welcome’ them. Eminiar VII is still at war, has been for 500 years, only now they do it with computers, so the people die but the culture isn’t destroyed.
When the computer registers an attack, all those declared victims must report within a day to be disintegrated… and the last attack hit the ship!
Those people try ot get everyone down by copying Kirk’s voice, and McCoy doesn’t know what to think of such an order, but Scotty does, he understands that it’s a trap. Ambassador Fox insists and goes down, and it’s up to Spock to save his life. Kirk destroys the computers that they use for the war, so now they must choose if continue a war for real or make peace… Ambassador Fox offers himself as negotiator, and they all go back up.
He did something right at the end, good for him. Still, Kirk cared nothing about not interfering with other cultures, did he? :-p

25- This side of paradise
ITA Al di qua del paradiso
3417.3 Omicron Ceti 3.  An agricultural colony came here a few years ago and Spock expected to find them all gone, dead, but they’re alive. Layla is a botanist there, and an old acquaintance of Spock. There’s no animals anywhere, not even insects, and their health is better than when they came. Weird.
Layla loves Spock and shows him how they survived. A plant covers him in spores and after a bit of initial pain, he tells her that now he can love her, and kisses her.
Everyone is affected by the spores, even those on the ship after they beam up some plants. They all go down to the planet, only Kirk is not affected. He’s alone no the ship now.
He gets covered in spores again but he fights it and now he knows that strong violent emotions can win against them, so he calls Spock on board and insults him heavily, also both his parents, until Spock has had enough and beats him up a little, but then the spores leave him.
Layla knows it immediately. Their goodbye is tearful. Layla: “come back with me please” - “I can’t” - “I love you. I said that six years ago, and I can’t seem to stop repeating myself. On Earth you couldn’t give anything of yourself, you couldn’t even put your arms around me. We couldn’t have anything together there. We couldn’t have anything together any place else. But we’re happy here. I can’t lose you now, Mr spock. I can’t” - “I have a responsibility… to this ship… to that man on the bridge. I am what I am, Layla, and if there are self-made purgatories, then we all have to live in them. Mine can be no worse than someone else’s” - “I have lost you, haven’t I? Not only you, I’ve lost all of it. The spores… I’ve lost them too” - “Th captain discovered that strong emotions and needs destroy the spore influence” - “And this is for my good?” and “Do you mind if I say I still love you?” and she hugs him.
Layla: “you never told me if you had another name, Mr Spock” and he caresses her face with a melancholic not-quite-a-smile “you couldn’t pronounce it” *sigh*
Spock and Kirk ‘cure’ everyone on hte planet, and Sandoval’s reaction is very different from Layla’s: “no accomplishments, no progress, three years wasted”
Everyone goes on board, the whole colony is relocated - all the people? Sandoval said they divided into three groups…
Spock’s last words about it: “I have little to say about it, captain. Except that for the first time in my life… I was happy”
Teleplay by DC Fontana, story by Nathan Butler and DC Fontana - just wanted to write that here

26- The devil in the dark
ITA Il mostro dell’oscurità
3196.1 They reach a colony, a mine of some sort because they sent a distress call. Kirk, Spock and McCoy go down. They say there is a monster killing people. They’ve been working for years, but it’s only a few months that this monster has appeared. Spock has soon a theory: what about a life based on other elements? Like silicon? And he’d have the whole solution right away if it wasn’t for McCoy laughing at him, so that he stops speculating until he has proof.
A red jacket is killed, he was looking around alone… Kirk sees it later and shoots it with his stronger weapon. Spock thinks it might be the last of its species and killing it would be a crime against science… but they see no other way. They hunt it, go down its tunnels. It is a corrosive creature, and makes tunnels as easily as we walk through water. There is hundreds of silicon nodules, as those taken away and discarded by the miners - they look like pretty metal balls, while the mine and the tunnels look like blue plastic, like the night in a nativity scene…
When the creature is right in front of Kirk - and not moving, afraid of this new weapon that hurt it, maybe? Now Spock is all: kill it! Because he’s scared for Jim of course, but then he reaches him and decides to try and meld minds, and it’s a Horta, and it’s hurting a lot. The Horta is an intelligent creature, Kirk calls McCoy to cure it but “I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer”.
But now they understand: the miners have killed thousads of its eggs, those nodules that they so carelessly destroyed. So they arrange to live peacefully, the Horta making tunnels and the miners using them.
McCoy: “By Golly, Jim, I’m beginning to think I can cure a rainy day”
So Spock melt minds again to explain it to the Horta and then they go. Before flying away they learn that the eggs are hatching, and the little Hortas start making tunnels right away.
Chief Vanderberg thinks the Horta’s appearance is ugly, which is exactly what mother Horta thinks of humans. But being highly intelligent, se liked Spock’s ears. Kirk: “I  suspect you’re becoming more and more human all the time” - “You… captain, I see no reason to stand here and be insulted”.

27- Errand of mercy
ITA Missione di pace
3198.4  They must go to Organia and do what’s necessary to prevent the Klingons from using it as a base. Spock and Kirk go down to Organia, Sulu is in command. There’s a village full  of people that look like in medieval times. Kirk offers protection against the Klingons, but they refuse, they insist they’re not in danger. Spock says there’s been no progress at all in this society for thousands of years, none. Kirk makes his speech about helping them change their world… but they refuse his help, and instead talk of having to protect him now that Klingons have landed.
Their leader Kor takes charge and the Organians do nothing to stop them, even give out Kirk’s true identity, but then free him when it’s clear the Klingon plan to torture them.
Both Kirk and the Klingons declare disgusting their passive attitude, but they insist that to them “violence is unthinkable”. So, when Klingons and Starfleet ships and men are about to fight, they finally intervene. All military forces are now paralyzed, and they can’t touch each other or their weapons because they burn. The Organians want to stop the conflict, but both Kor and Kirk want to fight the other. The Organians are no more humanoids, they evolved into energy beings, and now insist they leave. With regret, they all do.
On the ship, Kirk to Spock: “I’m embarrassed. I was furious with the Organians for stopping a war I didn’t want. We think of ourselves as the most powerful beings in the universe. It’s unsettling to discover that we’re wrong”.

28- The alternative factor
ITA L’alternativa
3087.6 Exploring an uncharted planet, fo a moment everything was shaken by a strong violent force, of non-existence. And a human being has appeared on the uninhabited planet below. This man says he’s been chasing a murderous thing, evil, who has destroyed every last soul on his world. Spock says there is now a sort of rip in the universe.
This Lazarous keeps switching between one with a scratch on his forehead and one without. He insists he wants the ships dilithium crystals to kill this thing. And when they fight, what we see is two blue figures like photo negatives.
Spock says he detects radiations without anything to justify their existence, and then they’re no more there. Kirk: “a magnetic effect which produces a winking-out phenomenon”, a mysterious source of radiation, the rip in the universe… and Spock notices that their instruments are designed to detect anything in their universe, energy or matter. So, if they can’t detect the source of the radiation, maybe the osurce is not from our universe. It doesn’t exist in our universe, it comes from outside. Another universe, another dimension occupying the same space at the same time. There are two Lazarus, from this and that universe. Kirk called them a positive and a negative universe, Spock now calls it matter and anti-matter. Which tend to cancel each other out when they meet…. Like the two Lazarus…
Lazarus steals the dilithium and runs, Kirk follows him and when he gets close we see him in negative, and then he speaks to the Lazarus with no cut on his head, who speaks calmly. They’re now in the other dimension, antimatter; this Lazarus says his people invented a ‘door’ to prove that it existed, but that Lazarus could not live knowing there was another him, and went crazy. So now, to save both universes, anti-Lazarus asks Kirk’s help to trap Lazarus in that corridor and close the ‘door’ by destroying his ship, that he uses to go to the anti-universe, like Kirk did.
Anti-Lazarus will keep him there forever; destroying one ship will destroy the other one, both doors will be closed, but anti-Lazarus is ok with paying this high price because it means to save both their universes; poor anti-Lazarus…

29- The city on the edge of forever
ITA Uccidere per amore
Bones, who so loves to inject people with stuff, accidentally empties a hypo full of cordruzine into himself. He wakes up calling them killers and runs away. They were ‘passing through ripples in time’ and investigating it. Bones goes down on the planet; Kik, Spock, Uhura, Scotty and two men follow. There is some kind of portal in the middle of the ruins. That’s the source of all the ripples they were studying. This thing can talk, it’s been waiting centuries for ‘a question’. It is “the guardian of forever”, a time portal that shows them images of the past. When McCoy appears, even Spock’s pinch can’t stop him, and he jumps through the portal. Immediately they lose contact with the ship, because McCoy changed history, and it’s all gone. Their only chance, to jump too and put things right.
Spock decides the right moment and he jumps with Kirk. It’s America in the past. They steal some clothes, give an absurd story to a cop about Spock being Chinese who had a bad accident as a child, all to explain his ears… then they run and hide in a basement where they change clothes and tell the owner the candid truth. Kirk tells Edith Keeler that they stole the clothes because they had no money. She gives him a job there and a place to stay. They work and try to build a computer to know exactly when McCoy will appear and what he’ll do. She has a sort of insight into things. She says that Spock’s place is and always will  be at Kirk’s side. Kirk likes her a lot immediately, and falls in love with her quite easily, but Spock finds out their two possible futures. In one, Edith Keeler died in a car accident, right then in 1930; in the other, McCoy saved her life, she lived and she became important, she preached peace, she created a pacifist movement that stopped America from going to war, so Hitler got the atomic first and won. And the whole world changed. What they need to do, the reason they came back here, is to make sure that she dies…
McCoy ends up here too, and Edith gives him a bed until he feels better - he looked really horrible. He talks of weird things, so she’d like to intruduce him to Kirk, but “I’m a doctor not a psychiatrist”.
And so it happens: Edith and Kirk were to go to see a movie with Clark Gable but Kirk heard McCoy was in there and went to call Spock, and they both came out to see that Edith was crossing the street without looking, and Kirk had to hold McCoy back to prevent him from saving her life…
And so they jump back through the portal and everything is as it was before, and they go away.
Not a word on the guy that took McCoy’s communicator and vanished…
What an episode, Edith was a good person, a very good person, but at the wrong moment in time…
Script consultant: DC Fontana

30- Operation: annihilate!
ITA Pianeta Deneva
3287.2 Spock says “the overall pattern of mass insanity destroying civilizations follows an almost straight line through this section of the galaxy”. Next is planet Deneva but they’re not responding, and Sam Kirk lives there with his family. Sam is a research biologist and in all the owrld they receive a message from Aurelan, his wife.
They go down. Sam is dead, Aurelan and her son Peter are still alive. Aurelan says visitors from another planet brought these horrible things 8 months ago. These things control the people and Aurelan dies too. Back on the planet, there’s some sort of gelatinous flying things and one attacks and stings Spock. It left living tissu inside his body, just like on Aurelan, attached to their spinal cord, “entwining and growing all about his nervous system”. It takes four men to stop him when he tries to take the ship. Then he tries to control his tremendous pain, and so he wants to go down and capture one of those things, since he’s no more in danger now. He studies it: a one-celled creature, like one huge brain cell. Then it might be part of something huge… A man got free flying towards the sun before he burned up. McCoy and Spock have tried heat and radiation with no results, and they were giving up without trying light. It works, and Spock volunteers to check the effects of such a light on a living being, and he goes blind. Then Christine brings the test results, and it wasn’t necessary. The creature are sensitive to light we cannot see. The Enterprise puts out 210 satellites orbiting Deneva, they activate them and it works, the things die. McCoy feels very guilty for having blinded Spock for no reason, but “the blindness was temporary”.
“There’s something about his optical nerves which aren’t the same as a human’s”. Then Spock explains why: “an hereditary trait, captain. The brightness of the Vulcan sun has caused the development of an inner eyelid, which acts as a shield against high-intensity light. Totally instinctive, doctor. We tend to ignore it, as you ignore your own appendix”. He goes back to work and McCoy approaches Kirk: “please, don’t tell Spock that I said he was the best first officer in the fleet”  and Spock turns “why, thank you Dr McCoy”. Kirk: “you’ve been so concerned about his Vulcan eyes, doctor, you forgot about his Vulcan ears”.
The end. Those things fell to the ground and burned, even if they were indoors. The planet and Jim’s nephew are saved. But what about Peter? Where will he go to live, if his parents are both dead? Clearly they forgot they mentioned three children in a previous episode. Well, I’m pretty sure they did, but can’t really be certain with what mind I’m stuck with…
End of season 1.
