Colombo - A stitch in crime

 This is the episode with Leonard Nimoy. :)

I kinda liked it, it was interesting, and it had Nimoy :) 

He played a talented surgeon, dr Mayfield, and I think he wanted to kill the other, older doctor to keep all the merit of their research, I think that was the reason, can’t see any other reason since that doctor Hidemann was quite jovial and full of admiration for his talent. Anyway, the doctor has heart problems, and Mayfield does the operation. Nurse Sharon doesn’t like him, though, she’s always suspected him of being no good, and she watches him closely during the operation, quite surprised that she found nothing suspicious about it, so when everyone else leaves the room, she stays behind, sort of apologizes for not trusting him, but then she finds some suture on the floor and then some on the tray, and it feels different than it should on her fingers. She’s suspicious and calls for an appointment with someone that mit be sure. Mayfield learns of it, not difficult since she makes no secret of her doubts and distrust. He kills her by her car, hitting her on the head, then he plants morphine in her house; when Colombo comes to investigate, Mayfield wants him to believe thatSharon was killed to get to the drugs, and somehow suggests an old friend of hers, a guy who used to do drugs but Colombo checks him out and he’s clean now. So Mayfield drugs him with an overdose. He thinks that settles it, but Colombo doesn’t believe that theory for a second. 

Mayfield is always collected, always cool, and when he openly laughs in Colombo’s face at something the lieutenant said, Colombo gets a bit angry, a thing that doesn’t happen often! 

Colombo clearly tells him that he knows Mayfield murder Sharon and the other guy, and even knows why, to cover up the fact that Mayfield stitched dr Hidemann heart valve with dissolving sutures instead of the permanent one, which will cause the doctor’s death in a few days. He tells Mayfield that if Hidemann dies, there will be a postmorten and it will all come to light. There’s no other way around it, Mayfield has to save Hidemann now, so he puts something in his medicine to cause him to feel bad so he’ll have to operate again, and this time he’ll do it right using the right sutures.

As soon as it’s done, Colombo rushes in with his team to search everything and everyone. Mayfield gets angry and shoves Colombo a bit, but has to let them do their work. Nobody finds anything, nobody saw anything, Colombo is baffled and feels beaten, and he says so to Mayfield, who is calm and collected as always. Colombo goes away reluctantly but soon realizes the truth and is immediately back. It had been rather strange that Mayfield lost his cool at the search, and Colombo now knows why. When he shoved him, Mayfield put the suture on Colombo’s green robe, that he had noe left in Mayfield’s office. Had he waited to long to get it, it would have been too late, but he got it in time and finds the sutures.

Dr Mayfield is busted.
