Harry Potter and the half-blood prince - 2009

There are death eaters attacks all around. Harry rides around on trains to keep his mind off things. Dumbledore has a black hand but doesn’t tell him how he got it. Harry might have had a date with a girl but Dumbledore took him away to Slughorn’s house. It’s wrecked but Dumbledore makes it as new with a single command. Slughorn has a picture of Lily when she was his student. He agrees to teach at Hogwarts again.

Dumbledore takes him to the Burrow. Ginny, Ron, Hermione and Molly hug him.

Bellatrix and Narcissa go to Snape’s house. Wormtail is there. Narcissa is worried for her son, and Snape swears to help him, makes an unbreakable vow, to complete his task should he fail.

The twins have a great store. One of the few still open. Ginny is dating Dean.

Our trio see Draco and his mom and follow them but don’t see much.

Luna sells the Quibbler on the train (maybe, I guess, but I didn’t see Ginny give her any money…)

Harry is sure Draco is ‘one of them’ now, a death eater, but Ron and Hermione think he’s too young. Harry spies on him but Draco notices something and when everyone’s off the train Draco petrifies him, kicks his nose and covers him again with his invisibility cloak (you know, if he really wanted to do what he has been set out to do, such a cloak could come in handy… if he was able to kill, he could have started right there… why didn’t Voldemort ask him that? Did he actually hear the whole prophecy, where it says that they’ll face each other at the end?)

Luna finds Harry because his head is full of wrackspurts and she helps him. She fixes his nose too. I’m glad he let her try.

Aurors are at Hogwarts for protection. Slughorn teaches potions and Snape teaches Dada. They didn’t know they’d take potions this year so Harry and Ron have no books; they take one from the cupboard and Harry gets the one from the half-blood prince (because Ron was quicker in getting the one in better shape).

Harry follows the corrections in it and makes a great potion and wins the vial of liquid luck. Dumbledore shows him the memory of the first time he met young Tom Riddle, already a disturbed child. He also asks Harry to get close to Slughorn because he needs something from him.

Cormac is after both the position of seeker and Hermione. She casts a confundus charm on him so Ron gets the post.

Slughorn invites both Harry and Hermione to his party but he can’t even remember Ron’s name.

Katie touches a cursed necklace. She said she had to deliver it to Dumbledore. Harry accuses Malfoy right away because ‘he just knows it’.

Ginny is dating Dean and Ron is annoyed, but they fight a lot. Harry fakes giving Ron liquid luck so he feels confident and stops every ball. Hermione wanted to invite Ron to the next Slug party, but after he wins the game Lavender kisses him and Hermione cries.

Harry follows her to console her, he likes Ginny so he knows how she feels, and she knows it. She invites someone else to the Christmas party, so Harry takes Luna. Cormac vomits on Snape’s shoes. Draco gets caught ‘lurking in the corridor’. Snape tries to get him to accept his help but Draco refuses.

Ron is already fed up with Lavender.  At the Burrow, Lupin insists they should trust Dumbledore’s judgement, and if Dumbledore trusts Snape they should too. Arthur tells Harry the object he saw Draco so interested in is a vanishing cabinet, and also that Draco didn’t buy it, it’s still at the store.

The Burrow is attacked, Harry runs after Bellatrix, Ginny runs after him, so Harry has to save/help her against Fenrir. Their house is set on fire.

Next memory of Tom Riddle shows him at one of Slughorn’s party. Tom asked something but the memory has been modified, and Dumbledore needs to know what was being said, and Harry has to do it.

Ron ate chocolates sent for Harry, with a love potion from Romilda Vane. Slughorn gives him the antidote, then a drink to feel better but as he drinks it he gets sick. Harry shoves a bezoar down his throat and saves him. It was a bottle destined for Dumbledore. Draco keeps trying to get the cabinet to work, with insufficient results.

Harry follows Draco into a bathroom, sees him crying; Harry accuses him openly, they fight, then Harry uses a spell he found in the half-blood prince’s book, marked ‘for enemies’. Draco’s chest is slashed open, Snape saves him.

Ginny wants him to hide the book in the Room of Requirement. she hides it then she kisses him.

Harry drinks his vial of liquid luck to get his answer from Slughorn. Harry speaks in a different, confident way.

Harry and Slughorn meet Hagrid grieving for Aragog, he’s dead. After a touchy heart-to-heart, Slughorn gives Harry the real memory: Tom asked about a thing called a horcrux, and Slughorn explained it. Tom also asked if the soul could be split seven times. Dumbledore shows Harry the two horcruxes already destroyed, the diary and the ring from Tom’s mother. Dumbledore asks Harry to go with him in search of the next one. They apparate away, use a boat, then Harry is forced to force Dumbledore to drink a foul potion. Then, for water, Harry takes some from the lake (honestly!!! he cast Aguamenti on the sink but couldn’t take it out, couldn’t he just cast it on the glass/shell/whatever it was he was using? Or on Dumbledore’s hands even, or something, anything! Really not a ravenclaw, huh?

When he touches those waters, he’s attacked by the Inferi in it, but Dumbledore saves him.

Draco finally made it work, and this same night Bellatrix and a few others enter the castle. Dumbledore sends Harry to call Severus for him, but then Draco appears. He disarms Dumbledore but hesitates in killing him, says “he has to” but still can’t do it.

Snape tells Harry to be silent, then he stops Draco, and after Dumbledore’s “please”, he casts Avada kedavra on him and they all go away. Bellatrix breaks a few things but there’s no battle. Harry’s rage is all towards Snape, yells “coward” at him, yells “fight back” and yet Snape does not harm him nor does he let Bellatrix do it. Harry uses Sectumsempra again and learns that Snape is the half-blood prince and he invented that spell.

Harry tells Hermione that Draco was lowering his wand, it was Snape that killed the headmaster. And also that the necklace he and Dumbledore found is a fake. When she opens the pendant, there’s a sheet of paper inside: RAB stole the real horcrux intending to destroy it. They don’t know who that is.

Harry says he’s got to do it, he won’t come back. Hermione: “I’ve always admired your courage, Harry, but sometimes you can be really thick. You don’t really think you’re going to be able to find all these horcruxes by yourself, do you? You need us, Harry”

She also tells him that Ron is alright about him and Ginny.
