Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban - 2004

This movie was nice but it was also a bit frustrating. Well, when I think about it, this is not the only one that is frustrating, the frustration is into the story, I mean, in this one we see (and therefore Harry does, because we know only what he knows, all his books are from his point of view) that Snape is the one who wants to warn him and protect him, and yet since he is not ‘nice’ Harry goes on thinking he’s evil. The kid doesn’t know that ‘nice’ is easily faked, but when it comes to it, Snape is the one that actively did something, always. They all love Hagrid though, sure he’s a good one and very nice, but he’s also totally irresponsible!

Plot in details:

Harry is practicing his Lumos Maxima at night, hiding it from his uncle. Isn’t this ‘magic outside of school’? Or it’s only forbidden if muggles see you? Because I thought he couldn’t do anything, they say it quite often, and yet he has his wand and is doing magic…

Harry wants Vernon to sign a permission paper, but Marge has come to visit and she’s awful, a truly horrible woman. When she starts insulting his father and even worse his mother, he loses control and Marge inflates and starts floating. Harry is so angry, he takes all his stuff in his trunk, his wand and walks out. When he says Marge deserved it, Vernon launches himself at him but Harry’s got his wand so he stops. Harry says “anywhere is better than here” and out he goes.

He sees a black dog, rather scary, so he takes out his wand and the Knight Bus appears. He goes to the Leaky Cauldron where the Minister tells him “no harm done” about Marge, but that it was irresponsible to go out alone with a murderer on the loose. Harry learned that Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban only on the Knight Bus.

Next day, Ron and Hermione are there fighting because she’s got a cat and he’s got a rat. He’s back from a trip to Egypt. All the Weasleys are there. Arthur tells him he’s in danger, that Black escaped to come find him, and to not go looking for him.

On the train, they sit with Lupin. The train stops when Dementors check it and Harry hears screaming and faints. Lupin gives them all chocolate. (His patronus was just light, wasn’t it? not corporeal)

At school, they learn Lupin is the new Defence against the dark arts teacher (DADA) and Hagrid the new Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Also, there will be dementors outside the school, the Ministry insisted.

Harry has fun with his friends in his dorm room.

The first lesson is Divination and Harry has the Grim in his tea leaves. Then Hagrid takes them to see a hippogriff and teaches them how to open the book (nobody knew how to do it, only it was Draco who commented on it in his usual snotty way and Hagrid snapped at him his answer as if it was obvious). Harry bows to Buckbeak and gets to pat him and then fly on him. Draco insults it and it kicks his arm so Hagrid carries him to the hospital (because Hermione told him to).

Lupin teaches them Riddikulus. Neville says he’s scared of Snape and Lupin tells him to imagine him in his grandma’s clothes. A few of them try, then Harry has a dementor, Lupin intervenes and he has the moon, and it’s the end of lesson.

Another one cut short. They don’t seem to teach a lot in this school, do they?

Harry can’t go to Hogsmead with no permission, all his yearmates go. Lupin tells Harry he knew Lily: “your mother was there for me at a time when no one else was. Not only was she a singularly gifted witch, she was also an uncommonly kind woman. She had a way of seeing the beauty in others, even and perhaps most especially when that person could not see it in themselves. And your father, James, on the other hand, he had a certain, shall we say, talent for trouble.”

Back from the trip, Gryffindors can’t enter their dormitory because the fat Lady is gone and her portrait slashed. When she’s found, she says Sirius is in the castle so they are in lockdown. Snape asks Dumbledore if Potter should be warned, but Dumbledore says not now.

When Lupin ‘can’t teach’, Snape teaches them about werewolves. Hermione speaks without being called, and Draco blows an origami to Harry.

The next day is Quidditch, despite the awful weather. Harry is attacked by dementors and falls off his broom. He’s ok but his broomstick got smashed by the Whomping Willow. Next Hogsmead trip, he tries to go under his cloak, but there’s snow everywhere so the twins catch him right away and they give him the Marauder’s map, so he sneaks into Honeydukes.

Ron and Hermione are watching the Shrieking Shack when Malfoy comes to annoy them, then all of a sudden ‘something invisible’ throws snow at him and his 2 ‘friends’, until they run terrorised. Hermione got it right away that it was Harry, Ron didn’t.

Hermione wants Harry to give the map to the teachers but then he hears something and uses his cloak to sneak after McGonagall and Fudge to hear the story of what Black ‘did’, and that he is Harry’s godfather. Now Harry cries and wants to kill Black.

The holidays are over so Lupin teaches him the Patronus Charm. On his second try, he gets a bright light that defeats the boggart/dementor.

Ron and Hermione are fighting because Ron’s rat is gone and he accuses her cat.

There was a hearing for Draco’s accident and Buckbeak’s been sentenced to death.

Harry sees Peter Pettigrew’s name on the map at night, tries to follow the dot but of course he can’t see him. Snape finds Harry and sees the map and the map insults him.

Lupin arrives and takes the map from Snape, but then he is upset with Harry for not giving them the map, that if it fell in the hands of Black could have been very dangerous, and he also tells him that he has “a poor way to repay them”, his parents for their sacrifice. That was nasty.

Harry tells him it doesn’t work anyway because he saw Peter’s name on it and he’s dead.

Trelawney tells Hermione she has no gift for divination so she leaves the class. When alone, Harry hears Trelawney speaking a prophecy of something about to happen that night.

Draco wants to watch Buckbeak’s execution (so he says, but he’s quite far away to actually see anything, I think that’s all bravado). Hermione gets angry : “you foul, loathsome, evil little cockroach” is her best line, then she points her wand at him, then she lowers it but instead punches him in the face.

Hagrid found Scabbers and gives him back to Ron. They run from the back of his hut when Dumbledore, Fudge and the executioner arrive.

Scabbers runs from him, so Ron goes after it. The black dog bites Ron’s leg and drags him under the whomping willow. Hermione throws Harry in and then herself… quite strong that girl, huh?

They go down and find Ron in the Shrieking Shack with animagus Sirius Black. Harry attacks him but Lupin saves Black. They hug, and now Hermione reveals she knows he’s a werewolf ever since that lesson with Snape. Both adults want to kill Peter, but Snape runs in. He does not kill Black, but he believes him guilty and wants to turn him in. Harry takes Hermione’s wand and expelliarmus him. Harry wants to hear what happened, and they tell him the truth and revert the rat Scabbers into Peter, they want to kill him but Harry stops them, then Sirius and Harry help Ron out, Hermione walks, Remus brings Peter out (very much awake and alert, too. Nobody there is bright enough to even consider the idea of ropes, or even better of stunning him and levitate him to the castle, they must have levitation charms for sure, they’re important in the medical field)

Sirius asks Harry to come live with him and Harry agrees enthusiastically (he doesn’t question that, but okay, twelve years in Azkaban he’s not right in the head).

It’s full moon and Lupin did not take his potion, so Scabbers escape while Lupin transforms. Snape comes out on his own and sees the werewolf and puts himself between it and the three kids, and keeps doing it while the black dog fights it and lures him away, until Harry runs after them, but luckily it gets distracted by howling and goes away.

Harry runs after dog-Sirius, and the dementors find them, lots of them, but a big stag-patronus saves them. Harry wakes up in the hospital wing and Dumbledore suggests Hermione uses her time-turner to save Sirius and Buckbeak.

Ron can’t walk so she can only take Harry.

Back three hours to 7.30, they go first to save Buckbeak; Hermione lures him away with dead ferrets. Then the plan is to save Sirius. They wait for everyone to exit the shack. It was Hermione who did the howling and then Buckbeak saves them from the werewolf.

Harry thinks he saw his dad conjure the patronus but nobody comes and he conjures the patronus himself. Then they fly Buckbeak up to the tower and save Sirius. They say their goodbyes then Sirius flies away on Buckbeak and they run back to the infirmary.

Harry finds Lupin packing, he resigned because ‘someone’ let out that he’s a werewolf. (Again, everyone is against the totally-not-nice Snape, but Lupin DID forget his potion and he DID put students in danger and he DID let Peter get away, so…)

Lupin gives the map back to Harry then goes away .

Harry receives an anonymous gift, with a hippogriff feather : it’s a Firebolt, and he runs outside to try it right away.
