John Wick: Chapter 2 - 2017

It was a good one, all in all, but please, do something for the ‘lights’, because there were moments where I couldn’t understand a thing. Sure, it must be easier to shoot action scenes in that dark, they don’t need to be precise in what they do because nobody can really ‘see’ what they do… but it is rather annoying when you’re watching it. Ok the night, but it’s a movie, it doesn’t have to BE dark to show that it’s dark. It’s basic filming, alright?

Now the plot in details:

it starts concluding the last movie, because apparently John still doesn’t have his car, so he goes to get it back. The boss who had it knew John was coming, after he killed both his brother and nephew, plus their men (just a dozen? really?) he knew Wick wouldn’t stop. He arrives, and the men try to hit him with cars, once they even manage it, but none of them has guns, they go at him with bare hands… and die.

When John reaches the boss, though, instead of killing him he has a drink with him, proposes a peace and goes away with his half-destroyed car. Inside, there’s a picture of his wife inside a card.

His new dog is waiting for him.

He gives his car to be repaired.

He settles back home, but then Santino comes to his house. Santino says all John has is thanks to him, to something he did for him, so John owes him, because Santino has a Marker, a sign that John gave him to get free of this job, a way to get out, but that allows him now to demand a favour. Still, John refuses. Santino blows up his house, with all his pictures - but not the dog, we can see him outside with him.

John tells the cop Jimmy that it was a gasleak, then he goes to the Continental Hotel to ask about Santino’s whereabouts, but Winston is not at all surprised by what happened, after he refused to honour Santino D’Antonio’s Marker. John himself agreed to the Rules and the Marker, so now he should do it. Breaking the Rules means death: refusing to honour the Marker, killing Santino or running away, they all mean death. Winston tells him to do what Santino asks, then get his revenge, but not before. It’s the Rules.

John leaves his dog at the Continental, in Charon’s care, and goes to meet Santino.

Santino tells him he wants John to kill his sister because he wants to take her place. “There are 12 seats at the High Table: Camorra, Mafia, ‘Ndrangheta, the Chinese, the Russians…” but his father’s place was given to his sister to represent Camorra. He wants her place. But killing Gianna D’Antonio is no small thing. John is quite angry but still he goes to Rome to do it.

The man in charge of the Rome Continental is Julius.

John buys weapons, clothes, maps, and he does get into Gianna’s private chamber, where they talk and he explains about the Marker and her brother, so she knows he has no choice. She warns him that Santino will take New York, then she slashes her own wrists because, she says, she always lived her way, she’ll die her way. He holds her hand then shoots her after she passes out. Now Santino sets a contract of seven millions on his head. Winston has him sign with blood that the Marker has been repaid.

Now John has to fight people everywhere, who are looking for the reward. Even with wounds everywhere, he still fights and wins. Eventually he asks for help from a man posing as a beggar, with the words Take me to him. To the Bowery king.

The king talks a bit, but then he seems to agree that he’d rather have John after Santino than wait for Santino to take New York and his territory with it. So he gives John a gun with seven bullets and takes him to Santino. Quite in plain view, John starts shooting everybody on his way, meaning between him and his target. it’s a long battle, but he does it.

Left with no guards anymore, Santino seeks refuge at the Continental. John reaches him, Winston warns him to be careful, but John doesn’t care and shoots Santino right there at the bar.

He takes his dog back. Winston tells him the Camorra raised the contract on his head, international for double the reward. Also, John is no more welcomed at any Continental Hotel after he broke the Rules. Everyone will come after him, and he promises he’ll kill them all.

For now, Winston has given him an hour before he is officially excommunicado, so John runs with his dog for a head start.
