Zathura - 2005

 Details: Danny is six and feels ignored and that his brother Walter is better than him at everything. Walter is 10 and resents any type of attention Danny gets. Lisa is a teenager and therefore cares for nothing but herself, and sleeps while she should be looking after her brothers.

Their parents are separated but doing the best they can. We only see the father but he’s already a saint as it is, with them, he couldn’t do more.

Walter locks Danny in the basement and he finds a game there: Zathura, a Space Adventure.

He starts playing alone, and when a card mentions a meteor shower, their living room starts getting bombarded, and then when Danny opens the door, they boys see that they’re in space.

Lisa simply raised the volume of her headphones and noticed nothing and won’t listen to them.

The game freezes her, then they keep playing because Walter thinks, after he wins they’ll be back home, but they keep fighting between themselves.

A rotot attacks Walter, then the house enters a planet’s gravity field, for a little while, then moves on. Aliens Zorgons attack them, a “stranded astronaut helps them avoid the Zorgons by setting fire  to their couch. Danny wants him to stay.

Walter says Danny cheated like he always does and moves Danny’s piece back a few spaces, then it’s Walter that is ejected for cheating, but is saved by the astronaut.

Lisa is unfrozen and heats up the house again.

Walter keeps being nasty to little Danny, like everything’s his fault. 

He has to make a wish in front of a shooting star, and wishes for a ball. The astronaut was worried he’d wish for his brother to disappeara.

With the heat, the Zorgons are back. When they make a big fire, Lisa finally notices and puts it off and starts yelling like a silly girl. She stops only because he has pretty eyes, the astronaut.

They need to retrieve the board game and the brothers start bonding because of the danger they’re in together.

Danny is brave but also very very lucky to get the game.

Walter uses the reprogram card on the robot and it attacks the Zorgons.

When Walter gets another wish, he wishes for the astronaut’s brother that he lost in the game, and another Danny appears, because the astronaut’s a big Walter.

Both the astronaut and “his” Danny disappear. 

Danny spins the game again and wins… but Zathura’s a black home and both Lisa and Walter are pulled into it with most of the house.

Then they’re back home and everything’s alright, the house shows no sign of their adventure but the three of them remember all of it.
