Twilight - 2008

 I watched it once out of curiosity, the way I watch lots of stuff, but once is enough, I’m definitely over the age limit, this is a product that can appeal to young girls who have not had the time to watch or read much, because this is designed with all the things that can appeal to them, only it’s not done very well. It has everything: the girl is a loner, he is mysterious, he talks to nobody but her, he saves her life, he keeps saving her life… and so, after saying three words to each other, it is eternal love.

Also the protagonists were, I’m sorry but this is my personal opinion, really terrible at this. They had one expression between the two of them, and their lines came out like a script (… I know it was, but it shouldn’t seem so). Luckily the other actors did a decent job, but they had minor roles. I, for one, wouldn’t have minded to see more of the other Cullen, like Carlisle or the ‘kids’ life.

I haven’t read the book, but I sort of hope that she gave at least a reason why she suddenly declares such a profound eternal love, something more than ‘he’s cute’. The ‘saving my life’ part is probably the 90% of that reason, but it’s not a solid basis for a relationship. 

So, the plot in details:

It starts with her words “I’ve never given much  thought to how I would die, but dying in the place of someone I love, it seems like a good way to go”. 

Isabella Swan leaves Phoenix; her mom and stepdad are moving so she goes to live with her father, to Forks in Washington. Her dad is chief of police Charlie.

She meets Jacob, they played together as children.

Charlie bought her a pick-up, so she can drive to school.

At her new school, she immediately notices the adoptive children of Dr Cullen and his wife; there’s two couples, blonde Rosalie with Emmett and cool Alice with blond Jasper. Then there’s Edward. 

Bella and Edward already stare at each other, and what a coincidence a professor has her sit next to him in class.

He tried to change class, like he couldn’t stand her smell, and even didn’t show up for days. Then he reappears like nothing happened and actually talks to her, says he wants to know her. 

When she goes to her car, he saves her by stopping the other vehicle with one hand. 

The doctor, for her check-up, is Dr Cullen.

When she sees Edward, instead of Thank you, she asks how he did it, even has an accusing tone to her voice. He helps her up when she almost falls, tells her they shouldn’t be friends, she tells him he regrets saving her… he tells her she should stay away from him…

Jacob tells her a ‘legend’, that his family are descendants from wolves, while the six Cullen are descendants from an enemy clan…

— a man was found ‘killed by animals’, and then another, but this time we see three people calling him food —

Bella walks alone thru a dark alley at night, and Edward arrives in his car and saves her. She starts asking questions, he says he feels protective towards her, that he can feel everybody’s thoughts but not Bella’s. That he doesn’t have the strength to stay away from her. She touches his hand and feels how cold it is.

She googles for answers (…sigh…) and then asks him how long he’s been 17, tells him she knows he’s a vampire but also that she’s not afraid because she knows he won’t hurt her. He picks her up to show her how he looks under the sun (like he has sparkling glitter all over him).

He says her smell is like a drug to him, but she insists she trusts him… he says his family only feeds on animals. 

She’s already crazy in love. They’re together now. It was 1918 when Carlisle turned him because Edward was dying. Carlisle did the same to his wife Esme.

Bella understands other vampires killed those two men. Edward takes her home to meet his family. The parents and Alice are very nice to her, while Rosalie is hostile. There’s no bed in his room because he doesn’t sleep. Then with her on his back, he starts jumping trees. Then he admits watching her sleep at night. They kiss and he manages to control himself. Edward then meets her father as her boyfriend. 

There’s a storm so the Cullen play baseball. They’re having fun but then the bad vampires arrive: Laurent, Victoria and James. They pretend friendliness, but then James calls Bella ‘a snack’ so Edward takes her away. Edward says James is like a hound he’ll hunt her anywhere. So she tells her dad she wants to go away, hurts him to save him - but nobody stays there to check that James lets him be…

Laurent warns them of how capable James is. All of Edward’s family helps taking Bella away to safety. Edward tells her she’s all his life now. 

James is at her mom’s house, and tells her to ditch the Cullen to meet him alone to save her mom. This is the meaning of the line at the beginning. She knows he’ll kill her, but it’s to save her mum.

But mum is not there, just James. He hurts her, then Edward arrives to fight him but James is strong, but then all his family arrives. They kill James and burn him (If I’m not mistaken). 

Bella has poison in her, I guess James almost turned her, but Edward sucks away the poison then stops himself from sucking her dry… she wakes up in a hospital, her mum is alive, Edward is there. He tells her to stay away from him, she panics that she can’t leave him, so they go to the school ball together. 

Jacob’s dad wants her to stay away from Edward as well. 

They’ve barely arrived that she already wants to go away. She tells him she wants to stay with him forever, she wants to be like him.
