John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum - 2019

It’s nice, mainly because I do like the character of John Wick and because it is rather fascinating this world within our world, with all its rules, although in this film it almost seems like I’m the exception and everyone else is part of his world, because really, they come out of everywhere, how does he know who knows and who doesn’t it’s a mystery, I mean he hailed a taxi and it just so happened that the guy was familiar with their coins and actually knew him personally?

They went a bit too far in the number of assassins around and the number of people who knew him by face, not just by name. It sure added to the frenzy of the movie, but made little sense, if anyone still cares about that.

And the light, please! Come on, do something about the lights, because of course I understand that a lot of the action happens when it’s dark, but that’s no excuse for half the movie where I sort of guessed what was going on but didn’t really see clearly. It must be easier to shoot, since they don’t have to be precise in their fights, just move around a bit because it’ll be so dark nobody will know exactly what you do…

A good “light” is really important for movies, you know!!! It can be night and yet still be ‘visible’ for the audience.

Now the plot:

It starts where we left off, with John running as long as he has time. He sends his dog to Charon, the concierge at the Continental, then takes some stuff he left at the Library. He kills a guy with a book. Being excommunicado, nobody can help him anymore, it’s against the Rules. Still, he has five minutes to get a doc to patch him up, but he has to finish it himself. Now that time has run out, everyone wants the 14 millions on his head. He fills some Chinese guys with knives, then fights some probably-Italians in the stables with a horse’s help, then he escapes riding a horse.

He goes to a sort of people where ‘his people’ are. He’s originally from Belarus, Jardani was his name. He has a ‘ticket’ which means that they are bound to help him… actually they shouldn’t because it’s against the High Table’s orders, but still, he has his ‘ticket’, so they talk about it. They can’t hide him or help him, can’t go against the Rules or the High Table, so he asks only for safe passage to Casablanca, and after that he will have no more ‘tickets’ and he’ll never go ‘home’.

Meanwhile, an adjudicator tells Winston that he shouldn’t have helped John Wick, so he only has seven days and after that he will be replaced, then she gives the same warning to the Bowery King.

In Casablanca people fight with knives, luckily for John, but even that is stopped because the Manager granted him amnesty. Sofia of the Moroccan Continental. They know each other, of course, and John has Sofia’s Marker. If I got it right, she has a daughter but has to stay away to protect her, so he had John take her away to safety, she never wants to know where. Now he asks her to have him talk to Berrada,  her old boss.

She does, but then the man kills her dog, so Sofia shoots him, and Sofia and John, with her other dogs, fight and kill them all. Then she sends him on his way to the desert to find the Elder, who is above the High Table, apparently, for whatever reason. Maybe because he’s the richest of all? I don’t know.

So, John faints for lack of water and the Elder’s men find him and bring him to him. This guy, the ‘elder’, tells him that he can go on living if he does something now, if he completes a task. He will be no more excommunicado and there won’t be a contract on his head anymore, he just has to bind himself to the High Table, swear his loyalty, and his first task would be to kill Winston.

John cuts his own ring finger and gives the guy his ring and a sign of fealty.

The adjudicator sends assassins against the theatre from Belarus, killing a few men and stabbing the woman’s hands. Then it’s the Bowery’s time, all the men are slayed while the King gets seven cuts because he gave John seven bullets.

Back to America, John fights while speeding on a bike, then he goes to the Continental. Winston tells him he has no intention of stepping down; the adjudicator arrives and declares the New York Continental Hotel deconsecrated, and John asks Winston for lots of guns, and he has everything the Continental has at his service.

Now that it’s deconsecrated, people come here to kill him. Charon and John go against them while Winston stays back with the dog. They shoot a lot, then the Asian assassins stop more than once to give him time to get up, to get a good fight… weird, yeah. So when they are down, John doesn’t kill them, but then again maybe if they hadn’t stopped before, they would have won…

The Asian boss of these assassins, however, is killed.

The adjudicator now proposes a parlay, and they talk. Winston pledges his loyalty to the Table and then shoots Wick to prove it, and he gets his Hotel back, again consecrated.

Of course, John’s body is not found, it is  brought to the Bowery King, who is still alive and only has a few more scars. The King is really pissed off with the Table, and asks John if he is too. Of course he is. Well, ‘of course’ would be a long speech for him, he simply says “yeah”.

I guess if there is a Chapter 4 it’ll be them against the Table…
