All we had - 2016

No, it’s really nothing good. I didn’t like it much and the reason has a name and surname. It’s my personal opinion, ok, but Katie Holmes was not a good choice. This one could have been her ‘serious movie’ to take her out of the ‘pretty girl’ roles, but she’s not good enough for this. Not that this movie would have been great, the tooth-pulling scene I could have done without, I tell you, but it wasn’t all bad, it had good points. But it needed another lead actress and a spark in the direction that never came.

Details: Rita and her 14 year-old daughter Ruthie run away. Rita always chooses bad guys, and inevitably sooner or later they have to run away.

When Rita’s tooth aches, she pulls it out in a bathroom with the help of her daughter, then Ruthie steals a few things at a gas station. They keep driving without a map, but when their car breaks down, they use all their money to get it fixed.

When they’re hungry, they stop at a diner, eat and then drive away without paying, but for some reason the car won’t go forward, only backwards, so they go back inside the diner and confess, and lay all their troubles down.

The owner, Martin, has a really soft heart and hires Rita as a waitress, and she’s right terrible at it, a disaster. Ruthies cleans up and she’s terribly clumsy but Martin likes her and gives her a raise.

Rita plans to make enough money to repair the car and drive away. She keeps telling Ruthie not to trust anyone, that nobody cares.

Rita hooks up with a guy like she always does. Ruthie likes Pam, also working at the diner, they spend time together.

Rita’s new guy Vic has her buy a house. At a supermarket, they buy lots of stuff (with what money?)

Across their house, they meet the principal of the local high school.

Martin fixed their car.

Ruthie starts school, and she also starts smoking weed with others, and is suspended.

When Rita is sick, Ruthie runs to the principal to ask her to call a doctor.

Of course they have money trouble again, no surprise here, it was obvious. Rita also drinks too much! Ruthie hates that, and when some guys try to rape Pam, Ruthie saves her herself.

Rita tries to stop drinking. Pam’s trauma drives him to revert to being a man, dress like a man, and Rita is the one to help Pam be herself again.

Rita starts seeing Lee, a good man she keeps seeing at the AA meetings. When the girls lose their house, Lee has them move in with him. It’s nice, Lee’s nice, but Ruthie does not trust this new story of her mother. She runs away but eventually she ends up sleeping at Pam’s place.

Rita talks to her, admitting she needs Ruthie much more than the girl needs her, and they’re together again, driving home together. The end.

Rita - Katie Holmes

Ruthie - Stefania Owen

Martin - Richard Kind

Pam - Eve Lindley

Lee - Luke Wilson
